OpenGlass is among those looking to give Glass augmented reality powers, and it's figured out how to implement simple AR in real-time. The trick was accomplished by sampling the imagery pulled in by the headset's camera and extracting the portion of that feed that corresponds to the size of Glass's display. That feed is then sent to an OpenGlass server that overlays digital annotations provided by another users onto the video feed to augment the wearer's reality.
There's a video after the break demoing the AR functionality, but it's rudimentary and laggy in its implementation. Essentially, the system serves as a telestrator that superimposes scribbles into your field of view. It's a good proof-of-concept to show that Glass can do real-time AR, but there's a lot of work to be done before Glass can become a fully-fledged augmented (or mediated) reality headset.","sourceURL":"http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/21/openglass-google-glass-real-time-augmented-reality/","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/blogcdn.com/c7ffbba3a388a69487a94d7598fac6bde4d453aa/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/blogcdn.com/c7ffbba3a388a69487a94d7598fac6bde4d453aa/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":582,"original_height":329,"original_hints":"color,dark,photo,rgb-45-44-42"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fengadget.com%2F8c291c9127b42b59ceb43705d198cda07a5aab39%2F81b4e09ebf368580fd1df198f36f693f7b5ef72a%2Farticle.html&partner=engadget&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%253Am%253A4776453&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%3Am%3A4776453","partnerID":"engadget","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/engadget.com/8c291c9127b42b59ceb43705d198cda07a5aab39/81b4e09ebf368580fd1df198f36f693f7b5ef72a/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"Michael Gorman","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/b6340008e609005c71cea40f80a6e0cd9328cd00/thumbnail.jpg"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"trendspotter","authorUsername":"trendspotter","userid":"4776453","authorDescription":"Christoph Möller. Here’s a wristband that records audio 24 hours a day","excerptText":"So you heard a great joke at the pub last night but don’t remember the punchline. Was it was a priest or a lumberjack who walked into a bar with a three-legged okapi? Fret no more, because a Cincinnati-based company wants to produce a solution to the problem of lousy memories. No, it’s not a notebook. It’s an always-on audio-recording wristband called Kapture, and it will go live on Kickstarter on next month.
Here’s how it works: The device is always on but stores no more than the last 60 seconds of sound, in much the same way that many CCTV cameras overwrite their recordings after a set period. The point is not to have an exhaustive record of every sound ever encountered (which if you live in urban areas would consist largely of traffic and sirens) but to preserve something immediately after the fact.
What might such a device be used for, other than bar humor? Kapture’s founders suggest several occasions on which it might come in handy:
The reaction of a child experiencing something for the first time
• The unexpected interactions of daily life
• A humorous anecdote from your family reunion
• The birth of an inside joke with friends
• A solitary epiphany during your drive home
Whether most people talk to themselves while driving, and whether what seemed so amusing at the family reunion remains funny months later, are debatable. But there are believers. Kapture has already raised $300,000 in seed funding. The co-founders hope to raise another $150,000 on Kickstarter to take the device from prototype to production. That is a modest goal by Kickstarter’s standards, and there are probably enough people who like the idea.
“Wearable tech has really come on to the scene recently thanks to the increased compatibility with smartphones and other electronics devices. It’s time to start taking notice,” Kapture’s co-founder Matthew Dooley wrote this week. The technology speaks to a larger trend. Along with the Google Glass face-mounted camera and Dropcam’s ever-streaming wireless webcam, Kapture’s “fashionable” wristband with “a retro-inspired sound grill” brings us ever closer to a society of always-on peer-to-peer surveillance.","sourceURL":"http://qz.com/117778/think-google-glass-invades-your-privacy-heres-a-wristband-that-records-audio-24-hours-a-day/","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://qzprod.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/kapture064.jpg?w=880","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/wordpress.com/aa33333248c9fd78b0f5dcb0305a9c43579e3849/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":880,"original_height":495,"original_hints":"color,rgb-157-136-102,photo"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fqz.com%2F1a5a286a56070a121986ac6e50cafc34c6683a3e%2F2eb9324ecaedbf8088d32a8b24d09c8990b9c75e%2Farticle.html&partner=quartz&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%253Am%253A4776453&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%3Am%3A4776453","partnerID":"quartz","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/qz.com/1a5a286a56070a121986ac6e50cafc34c6683a3e/2eb9324ecaedbf8088d32a8b24d09c8990b9c75e/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"Leo Mirani","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/34658203/Quartz_Avatar.png"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"trendspotter","authorUsername":"trendspotter","userid":"4776453","authorDescription":"Christoph Möller. Be the first to read Wired's articles in print before they're posted online, and get your hands on loads of additional content by subscribing online.
No, it's not Google Glass -- it's a Japanese rival called the Telepathy One, due to hit the market later this year. Created by technology entrepreneur Takahito Iguchi, based in Tokyo, it has a simple purpose: to make human connections more intimate. \"It's to video stream what each person is viewing and share that experience,\" Iguchi says. \"If every human being could understand what each person is thinking and feeling immediately, it would be an amazing, lovely world.\"
The Telepathy One is a sleek headset covering one side of the head, with a micro-projector in front of one eye. \"It looks as if there's a five-inch screen floating in the air, about 45cm from your eye,\" says Iguchi. A camera captures what you see, communicating via your smartphone's data connection, and by Bluetooth.
Iguchi has worked with augmented-reality technologies for 20 years, but wearables are an exciting new direction, he says. \"I think it is a very natural thing to do, to try to connect human relations to the network,\" he explains.
Having established an office in San Francisco, Iguchi and his new team are hoping to focus on software development and seeking venture capital. His company, Telepathy Inc, hopes to be selling the headset in the US by the end of the year, at a price which will \"significantly undercut\" Google Glass. \"We would like to have a similar impact on society as the first-generation iPod,\" he says.","sourceURL":"http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2013/08/start/heads-up-google","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"xlargeURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/wired.co.uk/ab46506fed179cd6cdabafefd9edd2d4b441cbf0/original.jpg","largeURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/wired.co.uk/ab46506fed179cd6cdabafefd9edd2d4b441cbf0/large.jpg","mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/wired.co.uk/ab46506fed179cd6cdabafefd9edd2d4b441cbf0/medium.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/wired.co.uk/ab46506fed179cd6cdabafefd9edd2d4b441cbf0/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":1280,"original_height":1920,"original_hints":"color,hires,photo,rgb-105-105-114"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fwired.co.uk%2F52093cca57b4655dd7578ba818f9194769665b49%2Fb99deb13fce137d91efe4bf9fd92a30eb28e2746%2Farticle.html&partner=wired-uk&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%253Am%253A4776453&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%3Am%3A4776453","partnerID":"wired-uk","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/wired.co.uk/52093cca57b4655dd7578ba818f9194769665b49/b99deb13fce137d91efe4bf9fd92a30eb28e2746/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"by Jeremy Kingsley","referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"trendspotter","authorUsername":"trendspotter","userid":"4776453","authorDescription":"Christoph Möller. But what happens if good behavior is commodified?
In The Nature Of The Future: Dispatches From The Socialstructed World, Marina Gorbis argues we are moving away from the depersonalized world of institutional production toward a new economy built on social connections and rewards--a process she calls socialstructing. Along with the exciting opportunities to create new kinds of social organizations--systems for producing not merely goods but also meaning, purpose, and greater good--there is a possibility that this form of creation will bring new challenges, new inequities, and new opportunities for abuse. We need to understand the potential disadvantages of socialstructing as well, if we are to minimize the potential pitfalls. The following is an excerpt from the book, available April 9.
In his novel Dead Souls, originally published in 1842, the celebrated Russian writer Nikolai Gogol paints the exploits of Chichikov, a man on the lower rungs of Russian society. Driven by a desire to enhance his social standing, Chichikov develops an ingenious scheme: He travels to Russian villages and buys the records of dead serfs. It’s a brilliant idea that capitalizes on a unique and grotesque feature of feudal Russian society: ownership by landlords of the people who live and work on their land.
The number of serfs, or “souls,” one owns is a measure of one’s economic and social status. Landowners, in fact, pay taxes based on that number. The government keeps count of owned souls based on census numbers. Unfortunately the census takes place only infrequently, and many landowners end up paying taxes on their dead serfs. Grasping an opportune moment between the two censuses, Chichikov buys records of these dead souls from landowners eager to lighten their tax burden. Papers certifying Chichikov’s ownership of four hundred souls rapidly elevate his status: landed gentry open their homes to him, try to give away their daughters in marriage, and celebrate him at town functions. And all it took was a record of ownership of hundreds of souls.
With social connections, social standing, and social influence becoming new standards of value and something that …","sourceURL":"http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681790/your-reputation-will-be-the-currency-of-the-future","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"largeURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcompany.net/49ef2f8cb08a0e436ffb6538f2d3995d99d58711/original.jpg","mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcompany.net/49ef2f8cb08a0e436ffb6538f2d3995d99d58711/medium.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcompany.net/49ef2f8cb08a0e436ffb6538f2d3995d99d58711/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":1280,"original_height":720,"original_hints":"color,hires,photo,rgb-246-209-178"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Ffastcoexist.com%2Fc9abbd5245b2a2905be872c2540caa46e08bf0f1%2Ff537804d68cf82ea53014402aba6dd463b5787c9%2Farticle.html&partner=fastcompany&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%253Am%253A4776453&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%3Am%3A4776453","partnerID":"fastcompany","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcoexist.com/c9abbd5245b2a2905be872c2540caa46e08bf0f1/f537804d68cf82ea53014402aba6dd463b5787c9/article.html"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"trendspotter","authorUsername":"trendspotter","userid":"4776453","authorDescription":"Christoph Möller. But what if a new form factor could fundamentally change how solar works? A company called V3Solar has announced a brand new solar panel design--called the CoolSpin--that it says will make power 34% cheaper than the cheapest existing solar panels, putting the output well below the cost of generating even coal (8 cents versus 12 cents a kilowatt-hour, respectively). An independent technical reviewer agrees with the efficiency of their design. Could this be the breakthrough that the solar industry has been waiting for?
A big maybe. It’s certainly a cool looking design. The installations look like blue mushrooms. On top is a layer of lenses, which concentrate the energy coming in up to 20 times. They’re Fresnel lenses, an extra-thin, multipart lens invented in the 1790s for use on lighthouses, which concentrate a small lantern into a powerful beam. Also like lighthouses, the cones rotate. This way they can take the sun coming in from all directions.
The spinning and the lenses remove two problems found in most low-cost flat-panel solar installations: They usually face in only one direction on a roof and can only get optimal energy from the sun a few hours a day at best, or else they need high-cost mechanical and electronic tracking mechanisms. The spinning also cools the panels by throwing them quickly from light into shade--most solar concentrating designs must use water or mechanical cooling, which gets expensive.
The shape, spinning, and lenses layered on top, taken together, may boost the cells’ performance many times over. Finally, the whole thing is self-contained and can be mounted on a metal pole like a parking meter, rather than needing special racks, which lowers the cost as well and potentially makes it a good fit for small distributed energy installations, like in cities.
While still lacking a working prototype, the company claims to have 4 gigawatts of pre-orders. The current total installed solar in the U.S. is only 7 gigawatts, so embrace that stat (and the ones about how efficient the panels are) with a healthy dose of skepticism. If there’s anything we’ve learned, it’s t …","sourceURL":"http://www.fastcoexist.com/1681287/are-these-spinning-blue-cones-the-solar-panels-of-the-future","allowFullscreenImage":true,"hideOnCover":true,"inlineImage":{"largeURL":"http://a.fastcompany.net/multisite_files/coexist/imagecache/1280/poster/2013/01/1681287-poster-lead-v3solar-10kw.jpg","mediumURL":"http://a.fastcompany.net/multisite_files/coexist/imagecache/1280/poster/2013/01/1681287-poster-lead-v3solar-10kw.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcompany.net/b43571269a4d14918ec7d601c7146e1190995ec7/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":1280,"original_height":606,"original_hints":"color,rgb-115-115-104,wide,photo"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Ffastcoexist.com%2F04b44f68711c5482f833e7cb0ff76c8307816eb5%2F7df31a6e33684c74a6e75ae2f35a9600c6348a71%2Farticle.html&partner=fastcompany&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%253Am%253A4776453&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2Fvdqhn_2_S7e-kFgQdWLulw%3Am%3A4776453","partnerID":"fastcompany","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcoexist.com/04b44f68711c5482f833e7cb0ff76c8307816eb5/7df31a6e33684c74a6e75ae2f35a9600c6348a71/article.html"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"trendspotter","authorUsername":"trendspotter","userid":"4776453","authorDescription":"Christoph Möller. Here are 10 mindblowingly futurist technologies that should appear by the 2030s.As a futurist, it’s my job to make predictions. But I absolutely hate timelines, and you’ll rarely find me making claims about when some specific sort of technological wizardry will make an appearance. Viability interests me more than timelines. But the fog is starting to clear on what we can expect to see within the next twenty years. All the technologies I’ve listed below have a better than 50/50 chance of being actualized. Some of you may complain that I’m being a bit conservative by not including AGI (artificial general intelligence), molecular assembling nanotechnology, hive minds, IA(intelligence augmentation), radical life extension, powerful spacecraft propulsion engines, useful quantum computers, mind uploads, or whole human brain emulations — but I just don’t see these things coming to fruition until much later.Alright, here’s what we should expect by the year 2033:1. Artificially Intelligent Personal AssistantsI’ve been impatiently waiting for this one for quite some time now. Here are 10 mindblowingly futurist technologies that should appear by the 2030s.\n
\n
\n As a futurist, it’s my job to make predictions. But I absolutely hate timelines, and you’ll rarely find me making claims about when some specific sort of technological wizardry will make an appearance. Viability interests me more than timelines.\n
\n
\n But the fog is starting to clear on what we can expect to see within the next twenty years. All the technologies I’ve listed below have a better than 50/50 chance of being actualized.\n
\n
\n Some of you may complain that I’m being a bit conservative by not including AGI (artificial general intelligence), molecular assembling nanotechnology, hive minds\n
\n <inset id=\"453848055\">\n </inset>\n , IA\n <inset id=\"509309984\">\n </inset>\n (intelligence augmentation), radical life extension, powerful spacecraft propulsion engines, useful quantum computers, mind uploads, or whole human brain emulations — but I just don’t see these things coming to fruition until much later.\n
\n Alright, here’s what we should expect by the year 2033:\n
\n
\n 1. Artificially Intelligent Personal Assistants\n
\n
\n I’ve been impatiently waiting for this one for quite some time now. Microsoft got the ball rolling on this concept with Clippy, the office assistant that proved to be more annoying than useful. More recently, Apple developed SIRI for its iPhone, an intelligent assistant that can respond to specific language cues and access the Internet. But this is nothing compared to what’ll be available two decades from now.\n
\n
\n
\n
\n \n
\n
\n Looking ahead, we can expect our personal assistants to fully respond to natural language, including colloquialisms and our personal idiosyncrasies. And owing to ubiquitous computing (which we’ll look at next), our personal assistants will be accessible to us 24/7.\n
\n
\n What’s more, these agents will exhibit an uncanny level of general intelligence. We’ll even be able to have conversations with them. They will know everything about us, including our behaviors, our tendencies, our preferences, and our typical ways of responding to certain situations. Accordingly, they’ll be our virtual clones. In essence, they’ll be our proxy selves, representing us on the Internet and in the real world by taking the form of telepresent holographic avatars. They’ll write emails for us, book appointments, perform menial thought tasks, and even anticipate our needs. Of course, we’ll still be responsible for the decisions they make on our behalf — so we’ll need to be careful about the degree of autonomy we give our mind clones.\n
\n
\n 2. Computers Are Everywhere — But Unseen\n
\n
\n As noted, ubiquitous computing — also known as “pervasive computing” and “everyware” — is coming. Already today we have computers in our cars, our phones, our toys, and even our fridges. But they’re still very obvious. We often have to hold them. Or use keyboards to input information into them.\n
\n
\n
\n
\n \n
\n
\n Image: The sensor-laden pilates shirt called "Move" designed by Jennifer Darmour. \n
\n
\n These devices, however, are getting steadily smaller owing to the miniaturization revolution that’s in full swing (e.g. the shift towards microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS). In short order we’ll be living in a Rainbow’s End world, where information processing devices will be virtually everywhere, but completely invisible — absorbed into our surroundings. These computers will be in our clothes, our fashion accessories, and even in our contact lenses\n
\n <inset id=\"511910564\">\n </inset>\n . And to use them we’ll use natural language and haptic technologies (i.e. tactile feedback). Or better yet, these devices will be endowed with a certain level of “ambient intelligence” to help them perform autonomously under specific conditions.\n
\n So by the 2030s we’ll be completely surrounded by computers, but utterly unaware of their presence.\n
\n
\n 3. Virtual Animals with Digital Minds\n
\n
\n Whole brain emulations of human minds are quite a ways off, and likely won’t appear until the second half of the 21st Century. But in the stage leading up to this we’ll be able to emulate the brains of much simpler organisms. Already today there’s the OpenWorm project, an effort to digitize the brain of a nematode worm.\n
\n
\n
\n
\n \n
\n
\n Within the next two decades, we will most certainly be able to emulate the brains of other organisms, like ants and bees. And who knows, by this point we might even be able to start emulating the brains of simple mammals, like mice. But by virtue of doing so, we will have created virtual animals who essentially “live” inside a computer\n
\n <inset id=\"598064996\">\n </inset>\n . And someday, perhaps even by the 2030s, these digital brains will be uploaded to robotic avatars\n <inset id=\"5948202\">\n </inset>\n .\n
\n 4. The First Sanctioned Megascale Geoengineering Project\n
\n
\n The effects of climate change are getting increasingly hard to ignore, whether they manifest as superstorms, historically low levels of sea ice\n
\n <inset id=\"5938088\">\n </inset>\n , rampant wildfires\n <inset id=\"5936555\">\n </inset>\n , or record\n <inset id=\"5924800\">\n </inset>\n temperatures. Whether we like it or not, we will embark on geoengineering projects in the near future. And indeed, the conversations have already started.\n
\n
\n
\n \n
\n
\n Take, for example, the 25 scientists who recently declared that the time has come to start working on actual geoengineering solutions\n
\n <inset id=\"5936522\">\n </inset>\n to reverse the effects of rampant carbon emissions. Their particular solution is cloud whitening — the seeding of marine stratocumulus clouds with copious amounts of tiny sea water particles. They’re pretty much ready to get started, but they’ll need international support to do it legally. Others have even started to do it illegally\n <inset id=\"5952101\">\n </inset>\n .\n
\n Other geoengineering echniques\n
\n <inset id=\"5959069\">\n </inset>\n include artificial trees\n <inset id=\"5950271\">\n </inset>\n , enhanced weathering, ocean fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, and others. There’s even the prospect of weather control\n <inset id=\"5915251\">\n </inset>\n . Many of these are not technologically sophisticated\n <inset id=\"5922269\">\n </inset>\n , and could start pretty much immediately.\n
\n 5. An Interplanetary Internet\n
\n
\n This one’s fairly straightforward, but no less profound. Someone from Earth will reach Mars by the early 2030s — whether it be private enterprise \n
\n <inset id=\"5963349\">\n </inset>\n or a government agency. At least we freakin’ hope so! But regardless of who gets there first, one of the first things they’ll do is set up an Internet connection\n <inset id=\"511693210\">\n </inset>\n with Earth. And why not? The explorers — or settlers, if they’re part of the Mars One\n <inset id=\"5933349\">\n </inset>\n project — will both want and need to access and share information. Oh, and they’ll probably want to purchase something\n <inset id=\"608407423\">\n </inset>\n while they’re there when supplies run low.\n
\n 6. The First True Anti-Aging Intervention\n
\n
\n There are a crap-ton of products on the market that claim to be “anti-aging,” but each and every one of them is either cosmetic or a total scam. There is nothing available right now that can either slow down or reverse the effects of aging, not even resveratrol pills or rapamycin.\n
\n
\n But this is set to change by the 2030s. Futurists and gerontologists aren't entirely sure what form this intervention could take. It could be a genetic tweak, not unlike the one Cynthia Kenyon performed on roundworms to extend their lifespans by more than half. And indeed, there are efforts currently underway to map the genetic constitutions of supercentenarians to isolate the factors that make them so robust. It might involve therapies to restore the length of our telomeres\n
\n <inset id=\"463068577\">\n </inset>\n , or replenish our mitochondria. Or it could draw from any number of experiments currently being conducted on mice\n <inset id=\"486041314\">\n </inset>\n .\n
\n 7. Autonomous Robots with a License to Kill\n
\n
\n The rise of autonomous killing machines is a grim and frightening prospect, but it’s virtually guaranteed to happen.\n
\n
\n
\n
\n \n
\n
\n We already have various levels of autonomy in a number of weapons systems, including cruise and patriot missiles. The Aegis Combat System, which is found aboard naval ships, has an autonomous mode in which it uses powerful computers and radars to track and guide weapons to destroy enemy targets. There’s also Samsung Techwin's remote-operated sentry bot — which is currently deployed in the Korean DMZ. And the U.S. packbot/REDOWL system could be easily modified to take out snipers on its own.\n
\n
\n Despite calls to halt the development of machine-soldiers that identify and kill without human input\n
\n <inset id=\"5920084\">\n </inset>\n , military leaders will not hesitate to use a robot when a human life can be spared. What’s more, these machines will eventually exceed human capacities across a number of physical and cognitive domains. They may also be developed as part of a pending arm’s race.\n
\n 8. Our Very Own Lab-Grown Organs (and Meat)\n
\n
\n We are in the midst of the biotechnology revolution, the benefits of which are finally starting to emerge. Personalized medicine will emerge in the coming decades, where physicians will be able to prescribe medicines tailored specifically to our genetic constitutions. Biologists are also exceedingly close to being able to generate differentiated tissue from our very own stem cells. This will eventually allow us to grow our very own organs, including the heart — no donors needed, and with virtually no chance of rejection.\n
\n
\n \n \n \n \n
\n
\n These biotechnologies may work in tandem with additive manufacturing. Scientists recently 3D-printed a cybernetic ear\n
\n <inset id=\"487095899\">\n </inset>\n that utilizes embedded electronics. We may even be able print human embryonic stem cells\n <inset id=\"5981832\">\n </inset>\n and synthetic tissue\n <inset id=\"471782650\">\n </inset>\n . Personal Fabricators in Every Home\n
\n
\n Okay, maybe not every home — but it’s certainly poised to be the kind of thing that may be as ubiquitous as DVD players and traditional 2D printers are today. And there’s very little doubt that 3D printers are poised to be as disruptive as the techno-cognoscenti are predicting.\n
\n
\n Indeed, the ability to produce our own products in our very own homes will upset traditional models of manufacturing. At first, we’ll have to pay for these items to download the specs. But eventually, owing to the open source movement, many of these items will be shared and available for free.\n
\n
\n And in addition to day-to-day items and electronics, these printers could generate handguns\n
\n <inset id=\"493142303\">\n </inset>\n (which is not such a hot idea), vaccines\n <inset id=\"5952448\">\n </inset>\n (we won’t have to leave our homes to get inoculated during a pandemic), self-assembling robots\n <inset id=\"498809514\">\n </inset>\n , and androids\n <inset id=\"5978026\">\n </inset>\n . The Oceans Will Quench the World’s Thirst\n
\n
\n Industrial-scale desalination is poised to make an appearance by the 2030s\n
\n <inset id=\"5937391\">\n </inset>\n . Experts predict that the growing freshwater deficits could be increasingly covered starting in the 2020s, and possibly as late as the 2030s.
