Open­Glass is among those look­ing to give Glass aug­ment­ed real­i­ty pow­ers, and it's fig­ured out how to imple­ment sim­ple AR in real-time. The trick was accom­plished by sam­pling the imagery pulled in by the head­set's cam­era and extract­ing the por­tion of that feed that cor­re­sponds to the size of Glass's dis­play. That feed is then sent to an Open­Glass serv­er that over­lays dig­i­tal anno­ta­tions pro­vid­ed by anoth­er users onto the video feed to aug­ment the wear­er's real­i­ty.<p>There's a video after the break demo­ing the AR func­tion­al­i­ty, but it's rudi­men­ta­ry and laggy in its imple­men­ta­tion. Essen­tial­ly, the sys­tem serves as a telestra­tor that super­im­pos­es scrib­bles into your field of view. Fret no more, because a Cincinnati-based com­pa­ny wants to pro­duce a solu­tion to the prob­lem of lousy mem­o­ries. No, it’s not a note­book. It’s an always-on audio-recording wrist­band called Kap­ture, and it will go live on Kick­starter on next month.<p>Here’s how it works: The device is always on but stores no more than the last 60 sec­onds of sound, in much the same way that many CCTV cam­eras over­write their record­ings after a set peri­od. The point is not to have an exhaus­tive record of every sound ever encoun­tered (which if you live in urban areas would con­sist large­ly of traf­fic and sirens) but to pre­serve some­thing imme­di­ate­ly after the fact.<p>What might such a device be used for, other than bar humor? Kap­ture’s founders sug­gest sev­er­al occa­sions on which it might come in handy:<p>The reaction of a child experiencing something for the first time<br>• The unexpected interactions of daily life<br>• A humorous anecdote from your family reunion<br>• The birth of an inside joke with friends<br>• A solitary epiphany during your drive home<p>Whether most peo­ple talk to them­selves while dri­ving, and whether what seemed so amus­ing at the fam­i­ly reunion remains funny months later, are debat­able. But there are believ­ers. Kap­ture has already raised $300,000 in seed fund­ing. The co-founders hope to raise anoth­er $150,000 on Kick­starter to take the device from pro­to­type to pro­duc­tion. That is a mod­est goal by Kick­starter’s stan­dards, and there are prob­a­bly enough peo­ple who like the idea.<p>“Wear­able tech has real­ly come on to the scene recent­ly thanks to the increased com­pat­i­bil­i­ty with smart­phones and other elec­tron­ics devices. It’s time to start tak­ing notice,” Kap­ture’s co-founder Matthew Doo­ley wrote this week. The tech­nol­o­gy speaks to a larg­er trend. The fol­low­ing is an excerpt from the book, avail­able April 9.<p>In his novel Dead Souls, orig­i­nal­ly pub­lished in 1842, the cel­e­brat­ed Russ­ian writer Niko­lai Gogol paints the exploits of Chichikov, a man on the lower rungs of Russ­ian soci­ety. Dri­ven by a desire to enhance his social stand­ing, Chichikov devel­ops an inge­nious scheme: He trav­els to Russ­ian vil­lages and buys the records of dead serfs. It’s a bril­liant idea that cap­i­tal­izes on a unique and grotesque fea­ture of feu­dal Russ­ian soci­ety: own­er­ship by land­lords of the peo­ple who live and work on their land.<p>The num­ber of serfs, or “souls,” one owns is a mea­sure of one’s eco­nom­ic and social sta­tus. Landown­ers, in fact, pay taxes based on that num­ber. The gov­ern­ment keeps count of owned souls based on cen­sus num­bers. Unfor­tu­nate­ly the cen­sus takes place only infre­quent­ly, and many landown­ers end up pay­ing taxes on their dead serfs. Grasp­ing an oppor­tune moment between the two cen­sus­es, Chichikov buys records of these dead souls from landown­ers eager to light­en their tax bur­den. But what if a new form fac­tor could fun­da­men­tal­ly change how solar works? A com­pa­ny called V3Solar has announced a brand new solar panel design--called the CoolSpin--that it says will make power 34% cheap­er than the cheap­est exist­ing solar pan­els, putting the out­put well below the cost of gen­er­at­ing even coal (8 cents ver­sus 12 cents a kilowatt-hour, respec­tive­ly). An inde­pen­dent tech­ni­cal review­er agrees with the effi­cien­cy of their design. Could this be the break­through that the solar indus­try has been wait­ing for?<p>A big maybe. It’s cer­tain­ly a cool look­ing design. The instal­la­tions look like blue mush­rooms. On top is a layer of lens­es, which con­cen­trate the ener­gy com­ing in up to 20 times. They’re Fres­nel lens­es, an extra-thin, mul­ti­part lens invent­ed in the 1790s for use on light­hous­es, which con­cen­trate a small lantern into a pow­er­ful beam. Also like light­hous­es, the cones rotate. This way they can take the sun com­ing in from all direc­tions.<p>The spin­ning and the lens­es remove two prob­lems found in most low-cost flat-panel solar instal­la­tions: They usu­al­ly face in only one direc­tion on a roof and can only get opti­mal ener­gy from the sun a few hours a day at best, or else they need high-cost mechan­i­cal and elec­tron­ic track­ing mech­a­nisms. The spin­ning also cools the pan­els by throw­ing them quick­ly from light into shade--most solar con­cen­trat­ing designs must use water or mechan­i­cal cool­ing, which gets expen­sive.<p>The shape, spin­ning, and lens­es lay­ered on top, taken togeth­er, may boost the cells’ per­for­mance many times over. Final­ly, the whole thing is self-contained and can be mount­ed on a metal pole like a park­ing meter, rather than need­ing spe­cial racks, which low­ers the cost as well and poten­tial­ly makes it a good fit for small dis­trib­uted ener­gy instal­la­tions, like in cities.<p>While still lack­ing a work­ing pro­to­type, the com­pa­ny claims to have 4 gigawatts of pre-orders. The cur­rent total installed solar in the U.S. is only 7 gigawatts, so embrace that stat (and the ones about how effi­cient the pan­els are) with a healthy dose of skep­ti­cism. And owing to ubiq­ui­tous com­put­ing (which we’ll look at next), our per­son­al assis­tants will be acces­si­ble to us 24/7.\n </p>\n <p>\n What’s more, these agents will exhib­it an uncan­ny level of gen­er­al intel­li­gence. We’ll even be able to have con­ver­sa­tions with them. They will know every­thing about us, includ­ing our behav­iors, our ten­den­cies, our pref­er­ences, and our typ­i­cal ways of respond­ing to cer­tain sit­u­a­tions. Accord­ing­ly, they’ll be our vir­tu­al clones. In essence, they’ll be our proxy selves, rep­re­sent­ing us on the Inter­net and in the real world by tak­ing the form of telep­re­sent holo­graph­ic avatars. They’ll write emails for us, book appoint­ments, per­form menial thought tasks, and even antic­i­pate our needs. Of course, we’ll still be respon­si­ble for the deci­sions they make on our behalf — so we’ll need to be care­ful about the degree of auton­o­my we give our mind clones.\n </p>\n <h4>\n 2. Com­put­ers Are Every­where — But Unseen\n </h4>\n <p>\n As noted, ubiq­ui­tous com­put­ing — also known as “per­va­sive com­put­ing” and “every­ware” — is com­ing. Already today we have com­put­ers in our cars, our phones, our toys, and even our fridges. But they’re still very obvi­ous. We often have to hold them. In short order we’ll be liv­ing in a <em><a href=\"http://www.amazon.ca/Rainbows-End-Vernor-Vinge/dp/0812536363\" target=\"_blank\">Rain­bow’s End</a></em> world, where infor­ma­tion pro­cess­ing devices will be vir­tu­al­ly every­where, but com­plete­ly invis­i­ble — absorbed into our sur­round­ings. These com­put­ers will be in our clothes, our fash­ion acces­sories, and even in our <a href=\"http://io9.com/this-contact-lens-could-eventually-make-google-glass-ob-511910564\">con­tact lens­es</a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"511910564\">\n </inset>\n . And to use them we’ll use nat­ur­al lan­guage and hap­tic tech­nolo­gies (i.e. tac­tile feed­back). Or bet­ter yet, these devices will be endowed with a cer­tain level of “ambi­ent intel­li­gence” to help them per­form autonomous­ly under spe­cif­ic con­di­tions.\n <p>\n So by the 2030s we’ll be com­plete­ly sur­round­ed by com­put­ers, but utter­ly unaware of their pres­ence.\n </p>\n <h4>\n 3. Vir­tu­al Ani­mals with Dig­i­tal Minds\n </h4>\n <p>\n Whole brain emu­la­tions of human minds are quite a ways off, and like­ly won’t appear until the sec­ond half of the 21st Cen­tu­ry. But in the stage lead­ing up to this we’ll be able to emu­late the brains of much sim­pler organ­isms. Already today there’s the <a href=\"http://www.artificialbrains.com/openworm\" target=\"_blank\">Open­Worm</a> project, an effort to dig­i­tize the brain of a nema­tode worm.\n </p>\n <p>\n </p>\n <div class=\"light rgb-255-255-255 bounds-16-11-597-331 color graphic img\">\n <img src=\"http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18sxelz7kgmwzpng/ku-xlarge.png\" data-size=\"medium\" width=\"640\" height=\"352\" hints=\"graphic,color,bounds-16-11-597-331,rgb-255-255-255,light\"/>\n </div>\n <p>\n With­in the next two decades, we will most cer­tain­ly be able to emu­late the brains of other organ­isms, like ants and bees. And who knows, by this point we might even be able to start emu­lat­ing the brains of sim­ple mam­mals, like mice. But by virtue of doing so, we will have cre­at­ed <a href=\"http://io9.com/would-it-be-evil-to-build-a-functional-brain-inside-a-c-598064996\">vir­tu­al ani­mals who essen­tial­ly “live” inside a com­put­er</a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"598064996\">\n </inset>\n . And some­day, per­haps even by the 2030s, <a href=\"http://io9.com/5948202/new-project-aims-to-upload-a-honey-bees-brain-into-a-flying-insectobot-by-2015\">these dig­i­tal brains will be uploaded to robot­ic avatars</a>\n <inset id=\"5948202\">\n </inset>\n .\n <h4>\n 4. The First Sanc­tioned Megas­cale Geo­engi­neer­ing Project\n </h4>\n <p>\n The effects of cli­mate change are get­ting increas­ing­ly hard to ignore, whether they man­i­fest as super­storms, <a href=\"http://io9.com/5938088/its-official-arctic-sea-ice-levels-have-reached-a-record-low\">his­tor­i­cal­ly low lev­els of sea ice</a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"5938088\">\n </inset>\n , <a href=\"http://io9.com/5936555/over-a-million-acres-of-the-united-states-are-on-fire-right-now\">ram­pant wild­fires</a>\n <inset id=\"5936555\">\n </inset>\n , or <a href=\"http://io9.com/5924800/america-just-endured-its-hottest-12-month-period-on-record-again\">record</a>\n <inset id=\"5924800\">\n </inset>\n <a href=\"http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-death-valley-continues-to-broiler-after-breaking-record-20130701,0,760166.story\" target=\"_blank\">tem­per­a­tures</a>. Whether we like it or not, we <em>will</em> embark on geo­engi­neer­ing projects in the near future. And indeed, the con­ver­sa­tions have already start­ed.\n <p>\n </p>\n <div class=\"photo rgb-165-167-167 color img\">\n <img src=\"http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18sxh9s5kfmlsjpg/ku-xlarge.jpg\" data-size=\"medium\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" hints=\"color,rgb-165-167-167,photo\"/>\n </div>\n <p>\n Take, for exam­ple, the 25 sci­en­tists who recent­ly declared that <a href=\"http://io9.com/5936522/scientists-want-to-test-geohacking-solution-to-global-warming-right-now\">the time has come to start work­ing on actu­al geo­engi­neer­ing solu­tions</a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"5936522\">\n </inset>\n to reverse the effects of ram­pant car­bon emis­sions. Their par­tic­u­lar solu­tion is cloud whiten­ing — the seed­ing of marine stra­tocu­mu­lus clouds with copi­ous amounts of tiny sea water par­ti­cles. They’re pret­ty much ready to get start­ed, but they’ll need inter­na­tion­al sup­port to do it legal­ly. <a href=\"http://io9.com/5952101/a-massive-and-illegal-geoengineering-project-has-been-detected-off-canadas-west-coast\">Oth­ers have even start­ed to do it ille­gal­ly</a>\n <inset id=\"5952101\">\n </inset>\n .\n <p>\n Other <a href=\"http://io9.com/5959069/10-ways-to-stop-climate-change-using-science-and-engineering\">geo­engi­neer­ing ech­niques</a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"5959069\">\n </inset>\n include <a href=\"http://io9.com/5950271/could-artificial-trees-solve-the-global-warming-crisis\">arti­fi­cial trees</a>\n <inset id=\"5950271\">\n </inset>\n , enhanced weath­er­ing, ocean fer­til­iza­tion, ocean alka­lin­i­ty enhance­ment, and oth­ers. There’s even the prospect of <a href=\"http://io9.com/5915251/could-we-build-a-weather-machine-to-stop-climate-change\">weath­er con­trol</a>\n <inset id=\"5915251\">\n </inset>\n . Many of these are <a href=\"http://io9.com/5922269/low+tech-geohacking-methods-that-changed-the-world\">not tech­no­log­i­cal­ly sophis­ti­cat­ed</a>\n <inset id=\"5922269\">\n </inset>\n , and could start pret­ty much imme­di­ate­ly.\n <h4>\n 5. An Inter­plan­e­tary Inter­net\n </h4>\n <p>\n This one’s fair­ly straight­for­ward, but no less pro­found. Some­one from Earth will reach Mars by the early 2030s — whether it be <a href=\"http://io9.com/5963349/spacex-founder-unveils-plan-to-send-80000-people-to-mars\">pri­vate enter­prise </a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"5963349\">\n </inset>\n or a gov­ern­ment agency. At least we freakin’ hope so! But regard­less of who gets there first, one of the first things they’ll do is <a href=\"http://io9.com/how-will-space-colonists-access-the-internet-on-mars-511693210\">set up an Inter­net con­nec­tion</a>\n <inset id=\"511693210\">\n </inset>\n with Earth. And why not? The explor­ers — or set­tlers, if they’re part of the <a href=\"http://io9.com/5933349/ask-bas-lansdrop-founder-of-the-mars-one-project-about-his-plans-to-put-humans-on-mars-by-2023\">Mars One</a>\n <inset id=\"5933349\">\n </inset>\n project — will both want and need to access and share infor­ma­tion. Oh, and they’ll prob­a­bly <a href=\"http://io9.com/paypal-teams-up-with-seti-to-launch-paypal-galactic-a-608407423\">want to pur­chase some­thing</a>\n <inset id=\"608407423\">\n </inset>\n while they’re there when sup­plies run low.\n <h4>\n 6. The First True Anti-Aging Inter­ven­tion\n </h4>\n <p>\n There are a crap-ton of prod­ucts on the mar­ket that claim to be “anti-aging,” but each and every one of them is either cos­met­ic or a total scam. There is noth­ing avail­able right now that can either slow down or reverse the effects of aging, <a href=\"http://www.nia.nih.gov/health/publication/can-we-prevent-aging\" target=\"_blank\">not even resver­a­trol pills or rapamycin</a>.\n </p>\n <p>\n But this is set to change by the 2030s. Futur­ists and geron­tol­o­gists aren't entire­ly sure what form this inter­ven­tion could take. It could be a genet­ic tweak, not unlike the one <a href=\"http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v464/n7288/abs/nature08980.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cyn­thia Keny­on per­formed on round­worms to extend their lifes­pans by more than half</a>. And indeed, there are efforts cur­rent­ly under­way to <a href=\"http://www.bumc.bu.edu/supercentenarian/\" target=\"_blank\">map the genet­ic con­sti­tu­tions of super­cente­nar­i­ans</a> to iso­late the fac­tors that make them so robust. It might involve ther­a­pies to <a href=\"http://io9.com/people-who-age-prematurely-could-soon-benefit-from-reju-463068577\">restore the length of our telom­eres</a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"463068577\">\n </inset>\n , or <a href=\"http://reason.com/archives/2004/08/11/the-transhumans-are-coming\" target=\"_blank\">replen­ish our mito­chon­dria</a>. Or it could draw from <a href=\"http://io9.com/do-these-startling-animal-studies-mean-your-lifespan-co-486041314\">any num­ber of exper­i­ments cur­rent­ly being con­duct­ed on mice</a>\n <inset id=\"486041314\">\n </inset>\n .\n <h4>\n 7. Autonomous Robots with a License to Kill\n </h4>\n <p>\n The rise of autonomous killing machines is a grim and fright­en­ing prospect, but it’s vir­tu­al­ly guar­an­teed to hap­pen.\n </p>\n <p>\n </p>\n <div class=\"rgb-64-62-74 photo color img\">\n <img src=\"http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/18sxhfjbsztngjpg/ku-xlarge.jpg\" data-size=\"medium\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" hints=\"color,photo,rgb-64-62-74\"/>\n </div>\n <p>\n We already have var­i­ous lev­els of auton­o­my in a num­ber of weapons sys­tems, includ­ing cruise and patri­ot mis­siles. The Aegis Com­bat Sys­tem, which is found aboard naval ships, has an autonomous mode in which it uses pow­er­ful com­put­ers and radars to track and guide weapons to destroy enemy tar­gets. There’s also <a href=\"http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/rok/sgr-a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sam­sung Tech­win</a>'s remote-operated sen­try bot — which is cur­rent­ly deployed in the Kore­an DMZ. And the U.S. <a href=\"http://go.redirectingat.com/?id=33330X911651&site=io9.com&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.irobot.com%2Fus%2Frobots%2Fdefense.aspx&xguid=7f6002f3920180e9ac0225f8a3a0328d&xcreo=0&sref=http%3A%2F%2Fio9.com%2F5920084%2Fmaking-the-case-against-autonomous-killing-machines&pref=http%3A%2F%2Fio9.com%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Dwallach\" target=\"_blank\">pack­bot</a>/<a href=\"http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/04/roombas-sniper-detecting-cousin-the-redowl-packbot/\" target=\"_blank\">REDOWL</a> sys­tem could be eas­i­ly mod­i­fied to take out snipers on its own.\n </p>\n <p>\n Despite calls to <a href=\"http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/un-envoy-urges-end-to-plans-for-battlefield-killing-machines-8637692.html\" target=\"_blank\">halt the devel­op­ment of machine-soldiers</a> that <a href=\"http://io9.com/5920084/making-the-case-against-autonomous-killing-machines\">iden­ti­fy and kill with­out human input</a>\n </p>\n <inset id=\"5920084\">\n </inset>\n , mil­i­tary lead­ers will not hes­i­tate to use a robot when a human life can be spared. What’s more, these machines will even­tu­al­ly exceed human capac­i­ties across a num­ber of phys­i­cal and cog­ni­tive domains. They may also be devel­oped as part of a pend­ing arm’s race.\n <h4>\n 8. Our Very Own Lab-Grown Organs (and Meat)\n </h4>\n <p>\n We are in the midst of the biotech­nol­o­gy rev­o­lu­tion, the ben­e­fits of which are final­ly start­ing to emerge. Per­son­al­ized med­i­cine will emerge in the com­ing decades, where physi­cians will be able to pre­scribe med­i­cines tai­lored specif­i­cal­ly to our genet­ic con­sti­tu­tions. Biol­o­gists are also exceed­ing­ly close to being able to gen­er­ate dif­fer­en­ti­at­ed tis­sue from our very own stem cells.
