In fact, bring­ing the kids along for your next Latin Amer­i­can adven­ture can be an enrich­ing expe­ri­ence for every­body involved. It’s eas­i­er than you think, and just a few sim­ple guide­lines can keep your once-in-a-lifetime vaca­tion from turn­ing into yet anoth­er cau­tion­ary tale of a fam­i­ly trip gone wrong.<p><b>So where should you go?</b><p>While much of Latin Amer­i­ca is great for the whole fam­i­ly, some areas should be avoid­ed because they are either too dan­ger­ous, too remote, too high, too low or just too darned hot. There’s been much ado about drug- and gang-related vio­lence in the region (and for good rea­son). For the time being, you may wish to skip bring­ing the kid­dos if you are head­ed to Colom­bia, El Sal­vador, Guatemala, Hon­duras or North­ern Mex­i­co. But with a bit of cau­tion, most other areas are good to go.<p><b>How do I keep my family healthy?</b><p>Check ahead for vac­cines. Many trop­i­cal areas of South Amer­i­ca require a yel­low fever jab. Breast­feed­ing moth­ers should not take the vac­cine – and you should def­i­nite­ly think twice about giv­ing the vac­cine to a tod­dler under two. Con­sult your doc­tor for advice before you go. In the end, your best way to avoid yel­low fever is by stick­ing to high­er ele­va­tions and stray­ing away from deep jun­gle areas. The best way to avoid most ill­ness­es is to avoid get­ting bit­ten in the first place (use long sleeves and a nat­ur­al bug balm). You’ll also need to be pre­pared with plen­ty of anti-diarrheals and a top-notch first-aid kit. While treat­ing your taste­buds in local mar­kets is fun for adults, unless you have older kids, stick to clean­er mid-range restau­rants when your kids are in tow.<p><b>How do I make it fun?</b><p>Let your kids take the lead, plan your itin­er­ary togeth­er and mix edu­ca­tion­al oppor­tu­ni­ties and fun in equal parts. While the Maya ruins of Mex­i­co and Inca cities of Peru are fas­ci­nat­ing his­tor­i­cal­ly, they are also good to play on. Cut your des­ti­na­tion list in half and plan on a few days by the pool. While kids are high­ly adapt­able (more adapt­able than most grown-ups in fact), it makes it eas­i­er if you stay in mid-range digs with pools, room to spread out and plen­ty of activ­i­ties. Pri­vate rooms in hos­tels can also do the trick, depend­ing on what you are used to at home. The stun­ning arch­i­pel­ago is tech­ni­cal­ly part of Pana­ma, yet indige­nous Kuna Indi­ans have had autonomous con­trol since the 1920s and day-to-day life here is glo­ri­ous­ly uncom­pli­cat­ed.<p><b>Get there:</b> Most visitors access the islands on a budget yacht tour from Panama to Colombia (or vice versa) as a scenic alternative to flying (there’s no road linking the two nations), but it’s also possible to organise a round trip to the San Blas departing from Panama City.• <b><br>Stay:</b> The bulk of visitors lodge on yachts, but there are a smattering of rustic guesthouses across the 365 islands, many of which can be booked through Luna’s Castle Hostel in Panama City.• <b><br>Do:</b> Wander around the palm-fringed islands and bask on their white-sand beaches – just don’t help yourself to coconuts: they are basically a form of Kuna currency and command a fee of $1. The four-day jour­ney boasts breath­tak­ing alpine scenery and com­fort­able hut accom­mo­da­tion, explored by the 14,000 peo­ple who com­plete the track each year.<p>Not all of these trekkers are lucky enough to see New Zealand's icon­ic bird, the kiwi, but there are plen­ty of other dis­tinc­tive species to observe. One of the most notable is the blue duck, an endan­gered water­fowl that has no close rel­a­tive any­where else. Unique species of spar­rows and robins are plen­ti­ful, and keas are abun­dant along the jour­ney. When Trek and Trav­el employ­ee Su-Lin Tan trekked the Mil­ford in April, she had a close encounter with one of these alpine par­rots.<p>WIN an exclu­sive Mil­ford Track anniver­sary walk includ­ing flights!<p>\"They are high­ly intel­li­gent and they pick at every­thing, includ­ing your backpack,\" she says. \"The keas are noto­ri­ous for steal­ing your shoes, boots, packs, and what­ev­er gear you leave lying around.\"<p>The scav­eng­ing birds are a minor annoy­ance on an oth­er­wise sim­ple jour­ney. The ter­rain along the well-marked Mil­ford Track is gen­er­al­ly flat and smooth, mak­ing it per­fect for peo­ple with rel­a­tive­ly lit­tle alpine expe­ri­ence.<p>The most phys­i­cal­ly demand­ing leg of the jour­ney is the trek up MacK­in­non Pass from Clin­ton Val­ley to Arthur Val­ley on day three. \"You start at about 120m, and you climb all the way to 1000m, then back down 1000m in the same day,\" Su-Lin says.<p>Camp­ing along the Mil­ford is ille­gal, so trekkers can light­en their loads by trav­el­ling tent-free. Three well-equipped huts along the track pro­vide basic neces­si­ties, such as fresh water, toi­lets, and bunk beds.Su-Lin rec­om­mends bring­ing along a stove and some fuel to facil­i­tate tea breaks between huts. This round-up of fresh-air sights in France will have you tum­bling down giant sand dunes and feel­ing the cool spray of water­falls in no time.<p>Gorges du Verdon<p>The spec­tac­u­lar river-carved cliff­sides of the Gorges du Ver­don make this south­ern French val­ley a mag­net to adven­ture trav­ellers (as well as a favourite spot for that less adrenaline-fuelled pas­time, <i>le pique-nique</i>). Kayak­ers and climbers test their lim­its on the rocky out­crops but stun­ning views are on show to road trip­pers too (the scenery from Moustiers-Sainte-Marie to Castel­lane is truly show­stop­ping).<p>Aiguilles de Bavella<p>Cor­si­ca feels like a world apart from main­land France, par­tic­u­lar­ly in sum­mer when the island is aflame with wild­flow­ers. In the south, the sight of the Aigu­illes de Bavel­la (Bavel­la Nee­dles) will stun you almost as com­plete­ly as local brandy <i>acqua­vi­ta</i>. For ver­tig­i­nous views, hike from Col de Bavel­la - there are walk­ing trails to suit all abil­i­ties.<p>Alpine wildlife<p>Ski­ing, board­ing and mak­ing snow angels are all excel­lent pas­times for France’s rugged Haute-Savoie region, but sum­mer in the moun­tains also has its charms. Grab your binoc­u­lars to spy fuzzy locals like wild boar, ibex and moun­tain hares. The mountain-dwelling mar­mot is a local icon, so if your wildlife-spotting draws a blank, gift shops in local towns like Morzine over­flow with cud­dly sou­venirs (for a friend, of course).<p>C<b>ô</b>te de Granit Rose<p>Brit­tany has such a sen­su­ous stretch of coast that even the boul­ders blush. The Côte de Gran­it Rose flush­es a del­i­cate shade of orangey pink, giv­ing a sur­re­al air to this breezy part of north­ern France. Drink in the views on a coastal walk before get­ting to work on Bre­ton cui­sine: mus­sels, cider and <i>galettes</i> (buck­wheat pan­cakes) are all fill­ing local favourites.<p>Dune du Pilat<p>Europe’s high­est sand dune, bare­ly an hour from wine-rich Bor­deaux, draws paraglid­ers, sun-worshippers and – believe it or not – the occa­sion­al skier (when win­ter brings a dust­ing of snow). After­ward, enjoy Cor­nish pasties (meat pies) in the cas­tle’s tea­room.<p><b>NAU­TI­CAL NODS</b><p>Sit­ting in a Fal­mouth hotel room, Ken­neth Gra­hame penned let­ters to his son, whom he affec­tion­ate­ly called “Mouse.” His epis­tles inspired <i>The Wind in the Wil­lows</i>, in which he wrote, “There’s noth­ing half so much worth doing as mess­ing about in boats.”<p>Stop by the Green­bank Hotel to see Gra­hame’s notes before hop­ping aboard a ferry bound for St. Mawes.
