Objects in Space That We Really, Really Can't Explain","excerptText":"Forget UFOs — there are a lot of objects and events in space that are identified, but still completely incomprehensible. From planets in our solar system, to inexplicable energy bursts from across the universe, here are some of the enduring mysteries of the space and time we call home.Image via NASAThe Color of Jupiter's Red StormImage via NASAYou've probably seen amazing pictures of this massive, red hurricane that's been whirling across Jupiter's southern hemisphere for at least 400 years. We know it's a hurricane-like phenomenon, that you could fit 3 Earths inside it, and that it's cooler and higher than nearby clouds. Over centuries of observation, we've also discovered that it changes color, moving between a pale pink and a bright red. It's also shrinking. But why has it lasted for so long? Why does it change color? There are a lot of good theories, but we simply don't know the answers yet.The Incredible Iciness of Saturn's Rings Image via NASAThe ultra-thin, icy rings of Saturn are another familiar part of our solar system are just as mysterious as Jupiter's red spot. We know what they're made of, and we understand some of the tidal forces that cause them to change shape. We're also pretty sure they formed 4.4 billion years ago, right around the time when most planets in the solar system were coalescing. But several hours before Wednesday afternoon's planned flight, company officials took the unusual step of postponing the launch for fear solar radiation could doom the rocket.
Orbital Sciences' chief technical officer, Antonio Elias, said solar particles might interfere with electronics equipment in the rocket, and lead to a launch failure.
Although the solar storm barely rated moderate, some passenger jets were being diverted from the poles to avoid potential communication and health issues. GPS devices also were at risk.
But the six men aboard the space station were safe from the solar fallout, Nasa said, and satellites also faced no threat. The Cygnus cargo ship aboard the rocket, for example, is built to withstand radiation from solar flare-ups.
The storm will also push the colorful northern lights further south than usual to the northern US.
The Cygnus was supposed to fly in December, but a breakdown in the space station's cooling system required repairs by spacewalking astronauts. The repair job, which was completed on Christmas Eve, bumped the supply mission to this week. Then frigid temperatures forced a launch delay from Tuesday to Wednesday. Then came the sun — at full force.
Frank Culbertson, an executive vice president for Virginia-based Orbital Sciences, said the delays can be frustrating, but he pointed out there's nothing wrong with the rocket itself.
\"All we're really delaying is the success that's going to come when we execute this mission,\" he told reporters.
The solar flare peaked Tuesday afternoon, but more activity was expected. Company officials said they would decide by Wednesday evening whether to attempt a Thursday launch or wait for the sun to settle down. The sun is at the peak of a weak 11-year storm cycle.
Experts are eva Printing a Star Cluster: How the Blind Can Feel Hubble Space Pictures","excerptText":"Scientists at the Space Telescope Science Institute devised a clever way for the blind to experience the wonder of the cosmos: 3D printing images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
This iconic image of star cluster NGC 609 depicts several bright, newborn stars wrapped in a resplendent bubble of gas and dust. But how do you communicate the beauty and wonder of these cosmic glamor shots to the blind? Easy: Print them in 3D.
A team of astronomers and computer engineers from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., is trying to translate 2D images from Hubble into tactile models that can be fabricated on a 3D printer. Yesterday, at a press conference hosted by the American Astronomical Society, astronomer Carol Christian explained how the team turned the photo of NGC 609 into a printout that can be \"seen\" by the blind.
\"We're making these for the visually impaired, who could not appreciate Hubble images by looking at them, but now they'll begin to explore them through touch,\" he said.
In these 3D printouts, made of plastic and roughly the size of a sheet of paper, different featuresstars, gas, and dust, for exampleare represented not by color but by different textures, such as circles, lines and dots. The varying heights of the features correspond to varying levels of brightness.
With the collaboration of the National Federation of the Blind, the scientists tested different designs with more than 100 volunteers from ages 8 to 81 and refined the design based on their feedback. \"We found we were able to create mental models for these people,\" Christian says. \"They would say, I can see it, I can see it,' and then they would describe what they were seeing in their head.\"
At the moment, these printouts represent 3D interpretation of a flat image. But further down the line the team would like to create a 3D spherical model of NGC 609. \"That's turning out to be quite a challenge,\" says Christianbecause Hubble doesn't see in 3D, creating full 3D models will require some scientific and artistic interpretation.
The team hopes that being able to experience Hubble data in a new way will provoke new insights and spur new questions. The 3D printouts may also be helpful for sighted people who like to learn with their hands, Christian said.
\"Our ultimate goal is for anyone who would like to hold a piece of the universe in their hands, …","sourceURL":"http://www.popularmechanics.com/3d-printing-lets-the-blind-experience-gorgeous-hubble-pictures-16357847?%3Fsrc=rss","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/popularmechanics.com/bff4f875031815d2a289e444aeffda5c2247c4da/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/popularmechanics.com/bff4f875031815d2a289e444aeffda5c2247c4da/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":300,"original_height":300,"original_hints":"color,dark,focus-150-150,photo,rgb-87-105-130,still"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fpopularmechanics.com%2F3607e769bce7855cd51ceaf9a8ca0b1e964344bf%2F6c85a8b00c3b2b916c05b80c4e82006a5da74f78%2Farticle.html&partner=popmech&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252F9rBfppCJRTKf_aOy3HyYJQ%253Am%253A31349868&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F9rBfppCJRTKf_aOy3HyYJQ%3Am%3A31349868","partnerID":"popmech","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/popularmechanics.com/3607e769bce7855cd51ceaf9a8ca0b1e964344bf/6c85a8b00c3b2b916c05b80c4e82006a5da74f78/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"By Sarah Fecht","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/6196/PopMechStack.jpg"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"Mark Draper","authorUsername":"drapermk","userid":"31349868","authorDescription":"Based in Copenhagen, Denmark.","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/4de28daf9a8d39da2b9581276b6b06a1967fbecc.jpg"},"text":"","urls":["http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/space/telescopes/3d-printing-lets-the-blind-experience-gorgeous-hubble-pictures-16357847?%3Fsrc=rss"],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"e4Kr-lzoTXaZzWeZR88xwA:a:31349868","dateCreated":1389272071,"ingestionTime":1389478455,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/user%2F31349868","title":"Mark Draper","linkType":"user","username":"drapermk","userID":"31349868","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/4de28daf9a8d39da2b9581276b6b06a1967fbecc.jpg"},"description":"Based in Copenhagen, Denmark."},{"type":"magazine","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F9rBfppCJRTKf_aOy3HyYJQ%3Am%3A31349868","title":"Astronomy, space and physics","referringText":"Astronomy, space and physics","image":{"smallURL":"http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VaRGidy6O14/UORsAeqYEXI/AAAAAAAAI8E/52gQH8XXqn4/s0/Mel15_anim2.gif"}}],"id":"flipboard-e4Kr-lzoTXaZzWeZR88xwA:a:31349868-1389272071"}],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"e4Kr-lzoTXaZzWeZR88xwA:a:31349868","dateCreated":1389272071,"ingestionTime":1389478455,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/mix%2F37706953","title":"Popular Mechanics","referringText":"Popular Mechanics","linkType":"user","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/6196/PopMechStack.jpg"}}],"partnerID":"popmech","flipboardSocialId":"flipboard-e4Kr-lzoTXaZzWeZR88xwA:a:31349868-1389272071","sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F9rBfppCJRTKf_aOy3HyYJQ%3Am%3A31349868","time":86,"count":11,"rssText":null}]
