Flights were not only expensive, but the connections between the U.S. and Ibiza were so bad that our choices included either very long layovers or switching airlines to make it to the islands within a 24-hour period.
Switching airlines means collecting baggage and battling security a second time — something I knew wasn’t an option with two cranky kids and no sleep. So our clever travel agent made a suggestion: Forget about making the trip in one day and embrace the inconvenience by spending a day somewhere en route.
We chose Barcelona, one of my favorite cities in Europe, because I knew it would be a hit with my kids. The result? A magical 24 hours, and the beginning of a new family tradition: the extended layover.
Here’s a few tips on how to transform an inconvenience into a great experience:
1. Choose your home base wisely
A 24-hour layover is not the time to neighborhood hop. With only a day to visit, it’s best to focus your activities in an area that has a good mix of sights and activities as well as places to eat. My personal rule: if we can’t walk there, we’re not going. For Barcelona, we focused on the barrio of Eixample, where we could take in Gaudí’s fantastical architecture, eat great food, and have our pick of hotels.
2. Pre-book your hotel
When you’ll barely be spending any time in your room, staying in a five-star resort doesn’t make sense. But pre-booking to ensure you can access your room immediately upon arrival is crucial to preserving everyone’s sanity. (For this trip, I booked an apartment at the Hotel Murmuri.) My children barely sleep on a plane, which means I pull an all-nighter every time we cross the Atlantic. Upon landing, we eat breakfast, then take a three-hour siesta — no more — to force ourselves onto the local schedule. It’s tough love, but it works.
3. Book everything else in advance
When we arrived in Barcelona, we already had our car service from the airport booked (I’d recommend Barcelona Airport Transfers for great service, charming drivers, and brand-new car seats) and every restaurant and activity planned. Long waits are the pits — even when you’re not suffering from jet lag. These days, you can buy tickets to most attractions online that allow you to bypass lines. I’d already booked an afternoon entry to the famous Casa Milà, but when we saw the around-the-block line at t …","sourceURL":"http://intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com/2013/07/23/a-new-family-tradition-the-24-hour-layover/","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/0ecfe92cb2cab3a92b949c0a5752e628e92a2f7a/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/0ecfe92cb2cab3a92b949c0a5752e628e92a2f7a/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":590,"original_height":392,"original_hints":"color,face-181-140-83,focus-181-140,photo,rgb-170-128-98"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fnationalgeographic.com%2Fb9804717ccef68576d9aebc620cab2e3aa06cd0b%2F0bd484c2834f5cc5a8dd043884f075c46e5f70e0%2Farticle.html&campaignTarget=flipboard%2Fmix%252F30220771&partner=natgeo&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%253Am%253A3199501&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","partnerID":"natgeo","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/b9804717ccef68576d9aebc620cab2e3aa06cd0b/0bd484c2834f5cc5a8dd043884f075c46e5f70e0/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"Henley Vazquez","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/c7f2868c969e09e0a1aa7ce825869b202d2731fe/thumbnail.jpg"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"National Geographic","authorUsername":"NationalGeographic","userid":"3199501","authorDescription":"Inspiring perspectives on the planet.","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/dc69447750a415b4d654648e6cc808ff73d9a90b.jpg"},"text":"","urls":["http://intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com/2013/07/23/a-new-family-tradition-the-24-hour-layover/"],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"_7zniBLVR92rGS8hZ4uEKA:a:3199501","dateCreated":1374677425,"ingestionTime":1377597237,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/user%2F3199501","title":"National Geographic","linkType":"user","username":"NationalGeographic","userID":"3199501","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/dc69447750a415b4d654648e6cc808ff73d9a90b.jpg"},"description":"Inspiring perspectives on the planet."},{"type":"magazine","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","title":"Family Travel Tips","referringText":"Family Travel Tips","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/0ecfe92cb2cab3a92b949c0a5752e628e92a2f7a/original.jpg"}}],"id":"flipboard-_7zniBLVR92rGS8hZ4uEKA:a:3199501-1374677425"}],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"_7zniBLVR92rGS8hZ4uEKA:a:3199501","dateCreated":1374677425,"ingestionTime":1377597237,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/mix%2F30220771","title":"National Geographic","referringText":"National Geographic","linkType":"user","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/c7f2868c969e09e0a1aa7ce825869b202d2731fe/thumbnail.jpg"}}],"hideTimelineDate":true,"partnerID":"natgeo","flipboardSocialId":"flipboard-_7zniBLVR92rGS8hZ4uEKA:a:3199501-1374677425","sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","time":95,"count":3,"rssText":null},{"id":"flipboard-_kjCUPwaQRGnVgBanGNKRw:a:3199501-1373293132","hashCode":928682039,"sortValue":31126082683385,"type":"post","title":"Rebooting the Family Vacation","excerptText":"The American family vacation needs an overhaul.
Once the best opportunity for enrichment and education as well as much needed R&R, today it’s often a dysfunctional, unhealthy, sense-dulling waste of time and money, typically enabled and abetted by an unimaginative travel industry.
Don’t believe me? Then head to some of America’s vacation hot spots this summer, such as Orlando, Gatlinburg, Grand Canyon National Park, or Honolulu, and watch the families.
Thoughtlessly, parents herd their kids into fast-food restaurants, novelty museums, and theme parks. At night, they deposit their offspring in the hotel’s kids center, where Junior and his siblings huddle around their electronic overlords, ignoring all external stimuli. Really, why even bother leaving home?
What’s driving the dumbing down of the American family vacation? We parents are, to some extent.
We’re too tired to prepare real meals for the kids, and we’re too busy to plan enriching travel experiences, so we buy what’s easy—processed junk food and off-the-shelf, highly marketed package vacations that are overly focused on amusement.
Consider this telling number: About 50 million visitors go to Florida’s Disney World complex every year to go on thrill rides and have tea with cartoon characters. Meanwhile, just 63 miles away, the Kennedy Space Center, where you can touch an actual moon rock and shake hands with a real live astronaut, draws a little over 1 million people a year. And did I mention that the $50 adult admission costs about half that of a Disney daily ticket?
Just as the food industry can produce healthier fare, the travel business can do better.
The idea came to me at the end of an otherwise spectacular guided group tour to Italy last year. We’d done it all — explored the Colosseum in Rome, visited the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, and seen Michelangelo’s “David” at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Then we sat down to dinner and the kids were served pizza, chicken tenders, and burgers. We flew more than 5,000 miles, to a country known for its cuisine, and they’re eating fries? Mamma mia!
Hotels have been phoning it in for years. When our kids were younger, we stayed at a swanky resort in St. Petersburg, Florida, that offered a kids program with activities around an ocean theme. We dropped them off before dinner. On the cypress-lined Appia Antica—blissfully closed to cars on Sundays—the tombs, tunnels, and secret Christian symbols of the catacombs tell how early believers sacrificed for their faith. The Scavi Tour at St. Peter’s Basilica is an unforgettable adventure for teenagers (15 years and up), descending deep below the basilica to explore the burial place of St. Peter, and kids of all ages can climb 551 steps (or take the elevator) to Michelangelo’s dome. Modern is juxtaposed with ancient, and art is featured throughout the city in ways that touch people on an everyday basis.”
Any child who has taken basic world history classes knows about Athens and its indelible contribution to Western civilization. But studying a place and its heritage is far different from actually being there, especially if you are on a flat-topped hill called the Acropolis, gazing up at one of the most perfect structures ever built by man — the Parthenon.
Where indeed would we be without the ancient Greeks, their legacy of philosophy and democracy, their obsession with figuring out how Earth and the heavens function, their groundbreaking strides in mathematics and medicine?
Greek civilization didn’t start in Athens, but it reached its greatest height here in the fifth century B.C. under legendary figures like Pericles, Sophocles, and Socrates.
Kids who clamber across the Acropolis and enter its new museum — which displays statues of a three-bodied monster and the goddess Nike leaning over to tie her sandal — gain a tangible connection with a bygone world that gave us so much of our own civilization.
The Parthenon alone is worth the trip.
Dedicated to the goddess Athena, the temple arose between 447 and 438 B.C. The roof may be gone, but nothing can detract from the building’s graceful, geometric lines.
Focal point of the Acropolis hill, the Parthenon was later turned into a Byzantine church, a cathedral, an Ottoman mosque, and a warehouse to store gunpowder for the Turkish army, before it was resurrected as a global icon after Greece gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire.
The shimmering, white structure is one of 20 atop or attached to the sides of the Acropolis, including two open-air theaters. In a flashback to those ancient times, families can attend performances at the hillside Odeon of Herodes Atticus during June’s annual Athens Hellenic Festival.
This piece was adapted from Editor in Chief Keith Bellows’s book 100 Places That Can Change Your Child’s Life and appeared in the May 2013 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine.","sourceURL":"http://intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com/2013/06/18/living-history-in-athens/","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/ba714f38166c527d3278b00547947dcfad3e90c9/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/ba714f38166c527d3278b00547947dcfad3e90c9/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":590,"original_height":393,"original_hints":"color,photo,rgb-109-106-94"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fnationalgeographic.com%2F76913e7a586240e86427e2f068cc8bab361090b5%2Fc434133640deb79082db52f01ffcce8bfc7b3afc%2Farticle.html&campaignTarget=flipboard%2Fmix%252F30220771&partner=natgeo&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%253Am%253A3199501&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","partnerID":"natgeo","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/76913e7a586240e86427e2f068cc8bab361090b5/c434133640deb79082db52f01ffcce8bfc7b3afc/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"Intelligent Travel","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/c7f2868c969e09e0a1aa7ce825869b202d2731fe/thumbnail.jpg"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"National Geographic","authorUsername":"NationalGeographic","userid":"3199501","authorDescription":"Inspiring perspectives on the planet.","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/dc69447750a415b4d654648e6cc808ff73d9a90b.jpg"},"text":"","urls":["http://intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com/2013/06/18/living-history-in-athens/"],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"nQ1VmYHxRNWAgZJNBDPe-A:a:3199501","dateCreated":1371588568,"ingestionTime":1377597237,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/user%2F3199501","title":"National Geographic","linkType":"user","username":"NationalGeographic","userID":"3199501","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/dc69447750a415b4d654648e6cc808ff73d9a90b.jpg"},"description":"Inspiring perspectives on the planet."},{"type":"magazine","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","title":"Family Travel Tips","referringText":"Family Travel Tips","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/0ecfe92cb2cab3a92b949c0a5752e628e92a2f7a/original.jpg"}}],"id":"flipboard-nQ1VmYHxRNWAgZJNBDPe-A:a:3199501-1371588568"}],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"nQ1VmYHxRNWAgZJNBDPe-A:a:3199501","dateCreated":1371588568,"ingestionTime":1377597237,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/mix%2F30220771","title":"National Geographic","referringText":"National Geographic","linkType":"user","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/c7f2868c969e09e0a1aa7ce825869b202d2731fe/thumbnail.jpg"}}],"hideTimelineDate":true,"partnerID":"natgeo","flipboardSocialId":"flipboard-nQ1VmYHxRNWAgZJNBDPe-A:a:3199501-1371588568","sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","time":98,"count":7,"rssText":null},{"id":"flipboard-Gg8SCTa-TIK7hUdCgeKEBQ:a:3199501-1371588476","hashCode":469520908,"sortValue":31126082683381,"type":"post","title":"The Maine of Spain","excerptText":"You’ve never heard of my favorite place in Spain. It’s not stylish Barcelona, foodie San Sebastian, or picturesque Mallorca. But La Coruña is just as unique.
I’ve been returning to the small capital city of Galicia — the northwestern corner of Spain that sits atop Portugal like a cap — for 12 years now. I first came here for the traditional post-graduation tour of Europe’s best bars and cheapest hostels with my boyfriend (now husband), one of La Coruña’s adoptive sons (he grew up in Bilbao).
The city became our home-away-from-home stopover, where his family fed us well, did our laundry, and let us camp out on the floor of their apartment by the port. The plan was to recharge, save some money, and push on to more exciting locales, but it didn’t take long for me to fall in love with La Coruña. Little did I know that just a few years later, I’d be introducing our children to its sandy beaches and lush, green interiors.
Perhaps one of the reasons tourists overlook Galicia is because it doesn’t feel all that Spanish. Its misty mornings, rolling hills, and fishing villages remind me more of Ireland. Its people do, too. Thanks to an early settling by the Celts, Galegos have lighter hair and complexions than most Spaniards, and their festivities involve bagpipes, not flamenco. But the region also calls to mind Maine. Mostly rural Galicia is never very warm, has lots of coastline and seafood, and — the best part — isn’t swarming with tourists.
If you’re traveling to Spain, book a few days in La Coruña and see what’s kept me coming back for so long. Here are a few highlights to spark your wanderlust:
Getting Oriented
La Coruña is on a peninsula that juts into the Atlantic, with an active fishing port on one side and the beach on the other. The old city is between, pushing up the hill toward land’s end, where the Tower of Hercules (a UNESCO World Heritage site) has served as a beacon for sailors since the first century.
A long promenade hugs the coast, offering spectacular views of the sea and city (and an ideal running route). Orzán beach is wide and golden, and despite the chilly water, hearty Galegos swim and surf daily. And the wonderful Casa de los Peces, an aquarium built into the cliffs, shouldn’t be missed — especially if you have children.
In the old city, home in on Plaza Maria Pita (a smaller version of Madrid’s Plaza Mayor), a hub for cultural activities — from puppet shows …","sourceURL":"http://intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com/2013/06/13/the-maine-of-spain/","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/082a6879c6bac2ce81b97e3594ccf3930c4f5198/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/082a6879c6bac2ce81b97e3594ccf3930c4f5198/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":590,"original_height":392,"original_hints":"color,photo,rgb-131-120-102"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fnationalgeographic.com%2Fdb279f95cc94775653b76d90ef6949b8d5cee270%2Fc30e6d7c0fb86fb0853b96314e1c5ae20dbcffad%2Farticle.html&campaignTarget=flipboard%2Fmix%252F30220771&partner=natgeo&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%253Am%253A3199501&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","partnerID":"natgeo","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/db279f95cc94775653b76d90ef6949b8d5cee270/c30e6d7c0fb86fb0853b96314e1c5ae20dbcffad/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"Henley Vazquez","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/c7f2868c969e09e0a1aa7ce825869b202d2731fe/thumbnail.jpg"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"National Geographic","authorUsername":"NationalGeographic","userid":"3199501","authorDescription":"Inspiring perspectives on the planet.","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/dc69447750a415b4d654648e6cc808ff73d9a90b.jpg"},"text":"","urls":["http://intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com/2013/06/13/the-maine-of-spain/"],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"Gg8SCTa-TIK7hUdCgeKEBQ:a:3199501","dateCreated":1371588476,"ingestionTime":1377597237,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/user%2F3199501","title":"National Geographic","linkType":"user","username":"NationalGeographic","userID":"3199501","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/avatar/dc69447750a415b4d654648e6cc808ff73d9a90b.jpg"},"description":"Inspiring perspectives on the planet."},{"type":"magazine","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","title":"Family Travel Tips","referringText":"Family Travel Tips","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/nationalgeographic.com/0ecfe92cb2cab3a92b949c0a5752e628e92a2f7a/original.jpg"}}],"id":"flipboard-Gg8SCTa-TIK7hUdCgeKEBQ:a:3199501-1371588476"}],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"Gg8SCTa-TIK7hUdCgeKEBQ:a:3199501","dateCreated":1371588476,"ingestionTime":1377597237,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/mix%2F30220771","title":"National Geographic","referringText":"National Geographic","linkType":"user","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/c7f2868c969e09e0a1aa7ce825869b202d2731fe/thumbnail.jpg"}}],"hideTimelineDate":true,"partnerID":"natgeo","flipboardSocialId":"flipboard-Gg8SCTa-TIK7hUdCgeKEBQ:a:3199501-1371588476","sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2F3k1zj9RxSVaJt49mLsOWtA%3Am%3A3199501","time":98,"count":8,"rssText":null},{"id":"flipboard-4u1pfaMRR56cJDL0ItbZQA:a:3199501-1371588440","hashCode":96210073,"sortValue":31126082683380,"type":"post","title":"The Best of South Africa: Family Style","excerptText":"South Africa has received its fair share of ink in recent years due to Nelson Mandela’s health, the Oscar Pistorius murder case, and the 2010 World Cup. It’s also grabbed the attention of more and more travelers, making what’s happening there that much more newsworthy.
As a result of the increase in overseas visitors, the country’s infrastructure has dramatically improved. This is good news for parents who have always wanted to take their children to Africa.
After returning from a recent trip with my family (see my last post), I’m more convinced than ever that South Africa is a top-notch destination for adventurous families. As Terry von Guilleaume of South African Airways Vacations said: “South Africa has such an incredible diversity of both natural attractions and culture, all within short distances of one another.”
Here are some of the places I’d recommend adding to your itinerary:
Cape Town
Since you’re traveling all the way to Africa, you have to spend at least a couple of days in the continent’s most cosmopolitan city. Cape Town feels like a mix of San Francisco, Miami Beach, and Rio – with a dash of New York City thrown in for good measure. But not to worry, this town is very family friendly.
Table Mountain is the must-see attraction – as long as there’s no cloud cover. The children will love the cable car ride to the top, and the view is as good as views get. Once back at sea level, head down to the Two Oceans Aquarium (so named because it sits at the confluence of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans) to learn about the incredible variety of marine life found along South Africa’s shores. Great white sharks, jellyfish, right whales, even penguins are all common in this part of the world.
Want to really impress the kids? Take a drive to nearby Boulder Beach and visit the indigenous penguin colony, or head to the beachside suburb of Muizenberg and watch the surfers shred it while you play in the sand.
Kruger National Park
South Africa’s largest national park has one of the most biodiverse wildlife populations on the continent.
You have the choice of staying on one of several private game reserves or venturing into the bush on a self-driven safari. This was my first time traveling away from my 9-month-old daughter, and I was a mess.
Here I was headed to — of all places — the Mom 2.0 Summit, to connect with other women whose heads were probably spinning with the same kinds of questions. If they were doing it, I could too, I reasoned.
Then I took a deep breath and boarded the plane.
Fast-forward six hours, and I was on the ground in southern California. Rightfully so. Going on a safari is undoubtedly one of the continent’s greatest draws, and countries like Kenya and Tanzania offer world-class tour packages for families.
But if you’re looking for an itinerary with a little more variety, few places can match South Africa for its mix of culture, beauty, and wildlife adventure.
As I prepared for my sixth visit to the country (the second with the entire family in tow), I wanted to move beyond what we’d already seen while keeping it age-appropriate. So, working with DSA Vacations, we decided to build in a few days in and around the beaches of Durban before heading into the bush.
Here’s a sample of the kid-friendly activities we experienced in South Africa’s third largest city:
Durban is an essential stopover on any in-country itinerary. Located along the Indian Ocean in KwaZulu-Natal and renowned for its year-round warm weather, the city is a beach lover’s paradise. The water was a bit too rough for the surf lessons we had planned for the boys, but there are miles of soft sand to explore, along with convenient snack bars and restaurants when tummies start to growl.
Although it’s tempting to stay on the beach, plan to spend at least half a day at uShaka Marine World, South Africa’s version of Sea World. There’s a nice aquarium and dolphin show to check out in between the Wet ‘n Wild Water Park rides. And if your hotel is located along the promenade (I’d recommend a family room at the Southern Sun Elangeni), you can walk, rent bikes, or even skateboard to get there and back.
One of Durban’s newest attractions, Moses Mabhida Stadium, built especially for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, offers a SkyCar that takes you high over the arena for a bird’s-eye view of the city. Spoiler alert: We didn’t think it was all that exciting. On the other hand, if your family has a teenager (or parent) who’s an adrenaline junkie, you can always take the plunge on the Big Swing, a 660-foot arc that swings you through the stadium itself. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!
If you have the time (and money), it’s well worth spending a few extra days at the Zimbali Lodge nestled in a coastal forest reserve 45 minutes northeast of Durban.
I’d already booked an afternoon entry to the famous Casa Milà, but when we saw the around-the-block line at t
