[{"id":"flipboard-QTJLpSBgRoCF3ippUj89rg:a:3624416-1390292575","hashCode":589464834,"sortValue":31113311173955,"type":"post","title":"There's An App Just Like The Greeting Card Company Joaquin Phoenix Works For In 'Her'","excerptText":"In Spike Jonze's \"Her,\" Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) falls in love with his oper­at­ing sys­tem, Saman­tha (voiced by Scar­lett Johann­son), in a world that's clear­ly set in the future, but not impos­si­ble to believe could soon exist.<p>As the film opens, we see Phoenix sit­ting at a desk, nar­rat­ing a love story, the words tran­scribed to look like a hand­writ­ten let­ter on the com­put­er.<p>Phoenix works for a com­pa­ny called \"Hand­writ­ten Greet­ing Cards,\" a busi­ness that, nat­u­ral­ly, seems to have dis­rupt­ed the act of writ­ing your own let­ters to your own loved ones.<p>While out­sourc­ing a cor­po­ra­tion to take care of some­thing so inti­mate would have seemed crazy even just a few years ago, it almost seemed believ­able while watch­ing the film.<p>In a \"W<i>ow, I can't believe we don't have that yet!\"</i> kind of way.<p>What makes \"Her\" so great (and per­haps uncom­fort­able to watch) is that the tech­nol­o­gy rep­re­sent­ed in the film is simul­ta­ne­ous­ly for­eign and famil­iar. We don't have an oper­at­ing sys­tem we could fall in love with, but we do have Siri. We may not have a com­pa­ny devot­ed to writ­ing per­son­al let­ters to our loved ones, but we do have an app on the per­son­al com­put­ers we carry with us that lets us do it with­out the \"trou­ble\" of buy­ing a card and a stamp at the store.<p>That app is called Inkly.<p>Inkly came out in 2012 and lets you send dig­i­tal greet­ing cards using your own hand­writ­ing or one of 30 pre­set fonts.<p>Here's how it works:<p><b>Write your mes­sage using a reg­u­lar piece of paper and and a pen.</b><p><b>Take a photo of it using the Inkly Cards app.</b><p><b>Inkly</b><p><b>The app will then scan the paper tak­ing just your hand­writ­ten mes­sage and pop it on the inside of your card. You can choose from hun­dreds of cards. mar­gin­al­ized genre long left out of the major award cat­e­gories.<p>Still, there was hope. Beyond the pop cul­tur­al foot­print gen­er­at­ed by Spald­ing's mem­o­rable coif, numer­ous high-profile per­for­mances and cover-ready good looks, there were acres of tal­ent.<p>In addi­tion to top-notch musi­cian­ship, Spald­ing deliv­ered a unique vision of her musi­cal make­up. Offer­ing a sonic por­trait of a per­son­al­i­ty as much as an artist, Spald­ing side-stepped the \"Big Three\" vocal touch­stones of Ella Fitzger­ald, Bil­lie Hol­i­day and Sarah Vaugh­an and nod­ded toward R&B and Brazil­ian music with her 2010 album, \"Cham­ber Music Society.\"<p>Had a new jazz age begun? Not on any charts that Bill­board fol­lows. But the echo from Spald­ing's left-field win can still be heard, and not just in her con­tin­ued rise.<p>This year, the jazz vocal cat­e­go­ry is again home to some of the genre's most talked about artists of the year, Gre­go­ry Porter and Cécile McLorin Sal­vant. The rise of both singers draws a dot­ted line to Spald­ing with unique, dif­fer­ing approach­es that infuse the genre with yet more life.<p>Not that the jazz vocal cat­e­go­ry ever want­ed for tal­ent, but its voic­es had begun to sound famil­iar. Kurt Elling, Cas­san­dra Wil­son and Dianne Reeves are a few of the unim­peach­able artists whom vot­ers repeat­ed­ly rec­og­nized in recent years, while other choic­es (Diana Krall, Al Jar­reau) con­tributed to an impres­sion that the cat­e­go­ry remained a beloved but refined cor­ner of the genre that often leaned toward the mid­dle of the road, if not the mid­dle aged.<p>Besides, one of the most pow­er­ful com­po­nents of jazz is its abil­i­ty to say some­thing beyond words. On Decem­ber 29th of last year, a British 19 year old, home for the hol­i­days and geeked on meow meow, stabbed his moth­er before cut­ting off his own penis with the same knife. Accord­ing to <i>The Mir­ror</i>, police respond­ed to an emer­gency call placed by his moth­er, 46, and dis­cov­ered the son \"hang­ing out of a bed­room win­dow with blood pour­ing from his wounds.\" As of early Jan­u­ary, the moth­er was in sta­ble con­di­tion, and the son's penis had been reat­tached. \"He is nor­mal­ly a very love­ly lad and very bright,\" report­ed a fam­i­ly friend. \"But unfor­tu­nate­ly, he had start­ed dab­bling in drugs.\" Yes, very unfor­tu­nate­ly.<p>So what type of intox­i­cant could drive a level-headed teen to such a far cor­ner of berz­erk? In Brook­lyn, the Bush­wick Col­lec­tive at Trout­man Street and St. Nicholas Avenue is emerg­ing as a new des­ti­na­tion for street artists.<p>Joseph Ficalo­ra, a long­time neigh­bor­hood res­i­dent, curates the vast out­door art gallery. He's thrilled with the trans­for­ma­tion after see­ing crime and graf­fi­ti plague the area.<p>Ficalo­ra, whose fam­i­ly owns a steel fab­ri­ca­tion plant in Bush­wick, coor­di­nat­ed with other local build­ing own­ers to find and pro­vide empty walls for street artists. They have come from as far as France and Italy, as well as right here in the U.S. like the Iran­ian duo Icy and Sot, who moved for polit­i­cal asy­lum.<p>\"The place is buzzing,\" street art afi­ciona­do Spencer Elzey told Busi­ness Insid­er. \"There are cycles where two or three new walls go up in a week or two.\"<p>Elzey gave us an insid­er's tour of the Bush­wick Col­lec­tive,
