But with a wealth of history, endless cultural treasures and great nightlife, it’s not going to be long before the region becomes the next travel hotspot. Major cities are accessible by plane from other parts of Europe, and once on the ground, driving distances are short and roads are smooth. An extensive bus network makes it possible to do the trip by public transport, and two weeks will allow you to see the major cities and get a taste of life in the Balkans. Hot summers and cold winters mean that the best time to go is late spring or early autumn.
Bosnia and Hercegovina
Sarajevo
Sarajevo is home to one of the prettiest pedestrian old towns in the Balkans. A walk through the markets is a must before visiting the Latin Bridge, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot at the start of World War I. In the evenings, join the lively crowds in the old city for an al fresco dinner of ćevapi, a local specialty of grilled meat kebabs. Further afield, visit the War Tunnel Museum to see how supplies were brought into the city during the siege in the 1990s.
Where to stay: Halvat Guesthouse.
Mostar
A short but beautiful drive away, Mostar’s iconic Old Bridge is the most famous in the Balkans. Narrow pedestrian streets
like Kujundziluk are packed with shops, and the busy cafes are perfect for watching daring locals dive off the bridge. Further afield, the city’s history can be explored in everything from centuries-old mosques to the haunting bombed-out buildings along Bulevar Revolucije.
Where to stay: Vila Park.
Croatia
Dubrovnik
The famous walled city of Dubrovnik is one of the most visited in the Balkans. Visitors can explore the white marble streets and walk along the imposing ramparts. A five-minute walk from the Old Town, a cable car takes passengers to the top of Srd Hill for great views over the city, and ferries ply the routes to nearby islands like like Lopud, Koločep and Šipan. Watersports enthusiasts can indulge in everything from kayaking to boating, and sun worshippers can find a sandy cove to soak up the rays.
Where to stay: Hotel Bellevue.
Montenegro
Kotor
The walled city of Kotor is often referred to as the 'new' Dubrovnik. Its narrow streets and pretty plazas rival those of its northern neighbour, and refreshingly lack the heaving tourist crowds. Now just add one or more of these fabulous routes for a classic campervan experience.
Route 1, Iceland
The 1339km of Route 1, which was only completed in 1974, allows drivers to make a complete circuit of this most dramatic of volcanic islands. The drive from Kevlavik airport to the capital, Reykjavik, is an eye-popping introduction - a landscape of jagged black lava fields. Highlights include Jökulsárlón, a pristine glacial lake on the south coast filled with huge icebergs.
Great Ocean Road, Australia
It's famous for a reason, you know. This 273km beauty tracing the coastline of southwest Victoria is lined with iconic landmarks, from the world-famous limestone pinnacles of the Twelve Apostles to Great Otway National Park, home to koalas and other wacky Antipodean wildlife.
Isle of Mull and Isle of Coll, Scotland
Britain has severe restrictions on wild camping, so you need to head well off the beaten track to enjoy a taste of freedom - try the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Coll in Scotland's Inner Hebrides. With 480km of coastline and mountains approaching 1000m, Mull is the largest and most developed, while tiny Coll measures just 21km from top to toe and 5km across.
Cape Town to Cairo, Africa
We admit it: this is epic. You'll need at least three months and a vehicle with serious credentials to cope with this trip, the overland route from South Africa to Egypt. But if you have the time, the energy and a four-wheel drive that can survive rutted roads and sand dunes, the rewards are endless and include a drive-by of Victoria Falls and Mount Kilimanjaro.
Rocky Mountains, Canada
Canada's 230km Icefields Parkway is one of the world's definitive drives, traversing Banff and Jasper National Parks. It's a geological wonderland where you can chill in geothermal hot springs or set foot on craggy glaciers. Keep your eyes peeled to spot elks grazing by the roadside or even catch a glimpse of a brown bear.
'Top to toe', New Zealand
New Zealand might just be the perfect place to take to the road. Throw a motorbike into the mix and you’ll have the time of your life. Here’s our guide to a two-wheeled adventure in the Mekong region.
Vietnam and Laos – sublime scenery from mountain to coast
To kick off, the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail has been upgraded into a major highway running along the spine of the country and offers some sublime scenery. The stretch from the old US airbase of Khe Sanh north to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is a beauty, including a wide section that was apparently a secret jungle landing strip for MIG fighters during the war.
Elsewhere in Nam, Ha Giang is the final frontier for motorbiking aficionados in Indochina. Like Halong Bay on high, karst peaks protrude from the top of rolling mountains and secluded villages are home to a colourful mosaic of ethnic minorities. The gorge road from Dong Van to Meo Vac is the stuff of biker yore, its towering cliffs looming high above and plummeting to the Nho Que River in the distance below. Just remember to keep an eye on the road, despite the breathtaking scenery.
A word of caution, however, Ha Giang still requires an official permit to visit more remote areas. Choose to travel without one and accidentally stumble upon military exercises in the mountains and you may find yourself a guest of the local Vietnamese police.
If the coast is more your cup of tea, ride notorious Highway 1 between Saigon and Hanoi. The traffic can be daunting around major cities, but there are some remote and desolate stretches with empty beaches. Aim high over the Hai Van Pass, ignoring the tedious tunnel that has been conveniently burrowed through the mountain.
For experienced dirt bikers, it is possible to explore remnants of the old Ho Chi Minh Trail across the border in Laos. The landscape varies from sheltered coves of pine-covered offshore islands to high rock cliffs battered by waves and wind, and usually fronted by reams of grey-blue ocean. Head to the west coast of Nova Scotia and around to New Brunswick to visit the Bay of Fundy where the highest tides on the planet create sienna silt shorelines that change by the minute with the incoming or retreating waters. Wherever you go you'll find storybook lighthouses, bucolic villages of white-picket homesteads and extremely friendly folk. The region is tied together by well-maintained roads where you can choose to take scenic country routes for leisurely exploration, or straight highways to cut down travel times. Good, clean campgrounds with RV hook-ups are everywhere or shack up at ubiquitous B&Bs.
Where to go
The obvious starting point for a road trip on Canada's east coast is Halifax, Nova Scotia, a hub of live music pubs, summer festivals and historic architecture. Three days Head west on HWY 3 stopping in at photo darling Peggy's Cove. The highlight here is a near-perfect lighthouse perched on a billow of bare granite boulders with crashing waves below. Take free tours on the local history and geology with the tourist office, or wander independently past fishermen's houses on stilts, cluttered by crab traps. From here the coast winds around inlets of evergreen islands until you reach historic Chester, which is known for the artists’ studios along its minuscule main street. Soon after Chester is larger Mahone Bay, the sunniest town on the coast. Browse small craft shops in colourful 19th-century buildings or rent sea kayaks to trip around the 100 or so islands in the bay. Lastly, stop at Lunenburg, the province's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, know for its distinctive 18th- and 19th-century architecture. Take a sailing cruise, hire bikes to tour the beaches of the peninsula, hop in a horse carriage to tour the town or just wander around the antique streets to see what you'll find. One week Follow the three-day itinerary then cross over to Wolfville and the Bay of Fundy via HWY 12. The country has all the key ingredients: dramatic landscapes, decent roads and off-the-beaten-track sights which are hard to access by public transport. The main attractions are concentrated in the west, which is served by three highways running parallel from north to south, making it a breeze to navigate your way around the country. The busiest road is the Desert Highway, the main artery connecting the capital, Amman, with Jordan’s tiny slice of coastline. It is the main route for accessing the jewels in Jordan’s crown - Wadi Rum and Petra - and the quickest way to travel up and down the country. The highway lives up to its name, with barren scenery along much of the route. However, nearing Wadi Rum, in the south, the landscape takes a striking turn with spectacular jebels (mountains) rising from the sands. To visit Wadi Rum itself you need to leave your car in a bordering village and hire a driver to take you in a 4WD. Expect a bumpy journey through the sand in a vehicle that has probably seen better days, but it’s all part of the experience so hold on tight and enjoy it. If you have the time, camping in a traditional Bedouin tent is a must, as is setting your alarm for sunrise when the desert looks at its fiery best. Similarly, the road to Petra is a taster of the dramatic views which await you in the ancient city. Craggy mountains and deep crevices pepper the route, with ample opportunity to pull over and take in the amazing views. As you head downhill to the southern tip of the country, the mountainous scenery continues to inspire. The end point is the vibrant port city of Aqaba which is worth a visit in its own right as well as being a good base for diving in the Red Sea. Another attraction that will be on most people’s itinerary is the Dead Sea. Floating around in the saltiest body of water on earth and getting covered in the much lauded Dead Sea mud is a welcome respite from long car journeys. Coming from the south of the country, the Dead Sea Highway hugs the water all the way to the resorts and spas in the north. For incredible views, stop off at the Dead Sea Panorama, a fantastic lookout point with a decent museum that offers a great introd …","sourceURL":"http://www.lonelyplanet.com/jordan/travel-tips-and-articles/77053","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/e831c4b65646edeea55c2d4847a4ef575c759304/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/e831c4b65646edeea55c2d4847a4ef575c759304/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":681,"original_height":454,"original_hints":"color,photo,rgb-126-111-101,still"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Flonelyplanet.com%2Ffeed_3Dflipboard_252Fcurator_25252Fmagazine_25252FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA_25253Am_25253A3199654%2F5d94cc586c7642d949e745f19b9757656e465783%2Fe1cafe2ef82efd39c2541228e82aa256be442892%2Farticle.html&campaignTarget=flipboard%2Fmix%252F30770277&partner=lp&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%253Am%253A3199654&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","partnerID":"lp","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/feed_3Dflipboard_252Fcurator_25252Fmagazine_25252FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA_25253Am_25253A3199654/5d94cc586c7642d949e745f19b9757656e465783/e1cafe2ef82efd39c2541228e82aa256be442892/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"by HEATHER CARSWELL·","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/30770277/LP_Logo_Avatar.JPG"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"Lonely Planet","authorUsername":"LonelyPlanet","userid":"3199654","authorDescription":"A beautiful take on travel.","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/Avatar/001a85970ccda058b3f63f8e9de86fbfd9a2146c.jpg"},"text":"","urls":["http://www.lonelyplanet.com/jordan/travel-tips-and-articles/77053"],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"vJmwVtumTtWsw0UpUX-P2g:a:3199654","dateCreated":1366323719,"ingestionTime":1383628977,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/user%2F3199654","title":"Lonely Planet","linkType":"user","username":"LonelyPlanet","userID":"3199654","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/Avatar/001a85970ccda058b3f63f8e9de86fbfd9a2146c.jpg"},"description":"A beautiful take on travel."},{"type":"magazine","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","title":"Road Trips","referringText":"Road Trips","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/2e8a5cbd040ff31ff8d62c323e97c25a73634fbc/original.jpg"}}],"id":"flipboard-vJmwVtumTtWsw0UpUX-P2g:a:3199654-1366323719","hideTimelineDate":true}],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"vJmwVtumTtWsw0UpUX-P2g:a:3199654","dateCreated":1366323719,"ingestionTime":1383628977,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/mix%2F30770277","title":"Lonely Planet","referringText":"Lonely Planet","linkType":"user","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/30770277/LP_Logo_Avatar.JPG"}}],"hideTimelineDate":true,"partnerID":"lp","flipboardSocialId":"flipboard-vJmwVtumTtWsw0UpUX-P2g:a:3199654-1366323719","sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","time":82,"count":7,"rssText":null},{"id":"flipboard-xTzzpER1TAuQxxoA4DOhgQ:a:3199654-1365539984","hashCode":3496519533,"sortValue":31120049799566,"type":"post","title":"Ghost town hunting in the American West","excerptText":"Nothing guarantees a Wild West adventure like exploring ghost towns, from abandoned mines where lucky prospectors once struck it rich to dusty frontier outposts where gun-toting outlaws once ran amok. Get ready to hit the (usually dirt) road out to these iconic ghost towns, most within spitting distance of keystone US national parks.
Bodie, California
In the Sierra Nevada mountains east of Yosemite National Park, and just north of the strange tufa spires of Mono Lake, California’s largest ghost town, Bodie, stands in an intentional state of arrested decay. As you walk down the empty main streets past the skeletal remains of banks, boarding houses and brothels, you might get the impression that the hurly-burly gold miners and red-light madams just packed up and caught the last stagecoach out yesterday. A national historic landmark, Bodie now harbors over 200 buildings and historic structures that could take you all day to explore. The rugged, partly unpaved access road is usually closed by snowfall in winter. Spring and fall are the most temperate seasons to visit; summer gets pretty dang hot (bring lots of water!).
Rhyolite, Nevada
Outside Death Valley National Park, the Nevada mining town of Rhyolite first boomed after the turn of the 20th century. During the few years it took for local gold mines to be exhausted, Rhyolite built itself an opera house and even had its own stock exchange. Dozens of Hollywood Westerns have been filmed here since the 1920s. To find Rhyolite, drive west of Beatty, Nevada, then follow the signs past the bizarre-looking installation art of the Goldwell Open Air Museum to the eccentric 1906 Bottle House, its walls constructed from over 50,000 recycled beer and liquor bottles. Snap a photo of the ruins of the three-story Cook Bank, silhouetted against a blazing blue Mojave Desert sky, before you leave.
Grafton, Utah
Just west of Zion National Park, this picturesque ghost town was established by zealous 19th-century Mormon pioneers, who planted fruit orchards and irrigated farm fields alongside the Virgin River. It seemed like an agricultural utopia – until spring floods and armed conflicts with Native American tribes discouraged most settlers from making a permanent home here. All editorial views are those of Lonely Planet alone and reflect our policy of editorial independence and impartiality.
The Emerald Isle is renowned for its spellbinding scenery. And while state-of-the-art main roads and motorways now link its cities and towns, there are some spectacular alternatives. Turn off the main thoroughfares to discover Ireland’s most scenic stretches of asphalt with these five picturesque routes.
Dublin to Portlaoise via the Wicklow Mountains (138km)
The bustling Irish capital of Dublin gives way to wild, remote countryside in the Wicklow Mountains. At the foot of the mountains, Powerscourt Waterfall (Ireland's highest), surrounded by beech, oak and pine trees, makes an idyllic picnic stop. Sweeping vistas over the surrounding blanket bog unfold from the Sally Gap mountain pass. The road winds through Wicklow Mountains National Park before descending to the leafy village of Laragh. Turning east here takes you past the precipitous, wooded Glendalough valley, sheltering Ireland's finest monastic settlement, founded in the 6th century by St Kevin. Many of its medieval buildings are still intact. The valley's two teal-blue lakes flank the road east towards the Midlands hub of Portlaoise.
Wexford to Waterford via Hook Head (95km)
Southwest of the Viking-founded town of Wexford, the Ring of Hook road circumnavigates the wind- and wave-swept Hook Peninsula. Its jagged southern tip, Hook Head, is capped by the black-and-white-striped, 13th-century Hook Lighthouse (the world’s oldest working lighthouse) and cloaked by sea spray. On the western side of the Hook Peninsula, it's a five-minute crossing by car ferry from Ballyhack, dominated by a 15th-century castle, to the thatched fishing village of Passage East. This storybook-pretty village neighbours the town of Crooke – in 1170, Strongbow (Robert FitzGilbert de Clare, earl of Pembroke) reputedly instructed his men to land ‘by Hook or by Crooke’ on his way to capture what's now the thriving port city of Waterford.
Killarney to Cork via the Beara Peninsula (320km)
On the doorstep of the glorious Killarney National Park, the lively town of Killarney is the jumping-off point for three captivating coastal drives, circling charming Dingle Peninsula to the north, the Iveragh Peninsula along the celebra …","sourceURL":"http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ireland/travel-tips-and-articles/77058","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/2e70fb3e444d40d59d1a8120b0b4b820e70e4950/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/2e70fb3e444d40d59d1a8120b0b4b820e70e4950/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":681,"original_height":454,"original_hints":"color,photo,rgb-69-73-93"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Flonelyplanet.com%2Fa1fe70afc1e30ba5668ce21e9abe33cb65cdd0c5%2Fc3511e56ad34ca19b668982fd8b4037c6b26d81a%2Farticle.html&campaignTarget=flipboard%2Fmix%252F30770277&partner=lp&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%253Am%253A3199654&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","partnerID":"lp","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/a1fe70afc1e30ba5668ce21e9abe33cb65cdd0c5/c3511e56ad34ca19b668982fd8b4037c6b26d81a/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"by CATHERINE LENEVEZ·","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/30770277/LP_Logo_Avatar.JPG"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"Lonely Planet","authorUsername":"LonelyPlanet","userid":"3199654","authorDescription":"A beautiful take on travel.","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/Avatar/001a85970ccda058b3f63f8e9de86fbfd9a2146c.jpg"},"text":"","urls":["http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ireland/travel-tips-and-articles/77058"],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"zYLLXLtzT5uFyBlGSDsh_g:a:3199654","dateCreated":1365007630,"ingestionTime":1383628977,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/user%2F3199654","title":"Lonely Planet","linkType":"user","username":"LonelyPlanet","userID":"3199654","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/Avatar/001a85970ccda058b3f63f8e9de86fbfd9a2146c.jpg"},"description":"A beautiful take on travel."},{"type":"magazine","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","title":"Road Trips","referringText":"Road Trips","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/2e8a5cbd040ff31ff8d62c323e97c25a73634fbc/original.jpg"}}],"id":"flipboard-zYLLXLtzT5uFyBlGSDsh_g:a:3199654-1365007630","hideTimelineDate":true}],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"zYLLXLtzT5uFyBlGSDsh_g:a:3199654","dateCreated":1365007630,"ingestionTime":1383628977,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/mix%2F30770277","title":"Lonely Planet","referringText":"Lonely Planet","linkType":"user","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/30770277/LP_Logo_Avatar.JPG"}}],"hideTimelineDate":true,"partnerID":"lp","flipboardSocialId":"flipboard-zYLLXLtzT5uFyBlGSDsh_g:a:3199654-1365007630","sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","time":84,"count":9,"rssText":null},{"id":"flipboard-XkkPLIFuT0OVISw5wQaa5g:a:3199654-1364853467","hashCode":261506590,"sortValue":31120049799564,"type":"post","title":"Five road trips from airports worldwide","excerptText":"London, Paris, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Sydney: all great cities. But let's say you've just landed and want to get away from their urban sprawl as quickly as possible; get out into the surrounding region where you can explore towns and natural treasures at your own pace without hassles of traffic, congestion and finding a place to park your car. These routes will get you out of the airport and away from urban coagulation as quickly as possible, giving you more time to explore.
London, United Kingdom
Heathrow–Windsor–Stonehenge–Chipping Campden, 220 miles (354km)
Everything that is London is east of Heathrow Airport, so immediately head west on the M4 motorway. After a mere nine miles (14km) you'll see the exit for Windsor, your first stop. This cheery little town is home to the sprawling Windsor Castle, where you'll most likely find the Queen when she's not at her urban digs.
Your next stop is Winchester, another beautiful town 50 miles (80km) southwest, where the namesake cathedral is stuffed with 1000 years of English history. About 29 miles (40km) further west is Stonehenge, which is beautiful, mysterious and clichéd all at once. Drive 62 miles (100km) north, along roads that take you through the aching loveliness of the English countryside. Your goal is Chipping Campden, a town in the heart of the Cotswalds, home to every iconically romantic image of rural England. Go for strolls amidst the beauty and tiny villages. When your idyll is over, Heathrow is just 74 miles (120km) southeast.
Paris, France
Charles de Gaulle–Reims–Champagne–Épernay, 189 miles (304km)
If there's one thing everyone agrees on, Charles de Gaulle Airport is no place to linger. Happily, this is France so your opportunities to roam pleasurably are boundless, such as the hills of the Champagne region. Yes, the City of Light is to the southwest but you'd never drive there – rather leave the airport on the D212 road and after 2.5 miles (4km) turn northwest onto the N2 and begin your drive across the ever-more-lovely French hills and dales. Your goal is Reims, about 87 miles (140km) northeast of the airport.
Reims has a famed 13th-century cathedral, replete with stunning rose windows, but your reason for this trip is embodied in the very name of the region: Champagne. Regional driving aptitude and situational awareness can range from commendable to terrifying, so stay on your toes when venturing into unfamiliar territory.
Knowing the local driving laws and unspoken road rules are just as vital when undertaking a road trip. What's the speed limit on unposted roads? If someone flashes their high beams is it because your high beams are on and you're blinding oncoming traffic, or because there's a cop hiding around the next corner with a speed detector? If you give someone the finger, will you receive the finger in return or will gun-play ensue?
Old school rules
The first speed limit law in the US was set in Boston in 1757. On Sundays, wagons, carriages and horses could not exceed walking pace. The fine: 10 shillings. Contemporary speed laws are sometimes a little more arbitrary. California's 'Basic Speed Law' and New York's 'Reasonable and Prudent' speed law can theoretically get a driver fined no matter the posted speed limit, if you don't stick with the flow of traffic or are otherwise deemed to be a nuisance.
Though rarely if ever enforced, there are aging, peculiar laws all over the country that confound reason, but are nevertheless still on the books. In New Jersey and Ohio, legally one must honk their horn whenever passing another car. You can be ticketed if you leave your traffic-side car door open longer than is deemed necessary in Oregon. And ladies, driving while wearing your housecoat is illegal in the state of California.
New rules to keep in mind
Generally speaking, texting while driving is merely a sign of dangerously low IQ, but since common sense isn't necessarily a prerequisite for getting a driver's licence, 39 states have taken the extra step to ban drivers from text messaging. Likewise, 10 states have also banned hand-held mobile phone use and drivers can be cited without any other traffic offence taking place.
While strapping a dog to the roof of a car is technically only illegal in Massachusetts and Alaska, it's frowned upon pretty much everywhere else too. It's legal for women to be topless in New York, except for Sag Harbor where it's illegal to disrobe in one's car.
Though we're certain a fascinating tale accompanies this regulation, Alabama law books …","sourceURL":"http://www.lonelyplanet.com/north-america/travel-tips-and-articles/77292","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/5ec20a469fa5d2de25947b7fa82d4d0828b124ff/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/5ec20a469fa5d2de25947b7fa82d4d0828b124ff/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":681,"original_height":454,"original_hints":"color,photo,rgb-180-97-59"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Flonelyplanet.com%2Ffa5f9191f9e9d7f88072aaab54ffe63e75d88811%2F28e4daf074de929db6c3a5a592075036302335fa%2Farticle.html&campaignTarget=flipboard%2Fmix%252F30770277&partner=lp&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%253Am%253A3199654&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","partnerID":"lp","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/fa5f9191f9e9d7f88072aaab54ffe63e75d88811/28e4daf074de929db6c3a5a592075036302335fa/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"by LEIF PETTERSEN·","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/30770277/LP_Logo_Avatar.JPG"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"Lonely Planet","authorUsername":"LonelyPlanet","userid":"3199654","authorDescription":"A beautiful take on travel.","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/Avatar/001a85970ccda058b3f63f8e9de86fbfd9a2146c.jpg"},"text":"","urls":["http://www.lonelyplanet.com/north-america/travel-tips-and-articles/77292"],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"TCpFHWSNSw6Uyih_CQ5iJA:a:3199654","dateCreated":1364663756,"ingestionTime":1383628977,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/user%2F3199654","title":"Lonely Planet","linkType":"user","username":"LonelyPlanet","userID":"3199654","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/uploads/Avatar/001a85970ccda058b3f63f8e9de86fbfd9a2146c.jpg"},"description":"A beautiful take on travel."},{"type":"magazine","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","title":"Road Trips","referringText":"Road Trips","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/lonelyplanet.com/2e8a5cbd040ff31ff8d62c323e97c25a73634fbc/original.jpg"}}],"id":"flipboard-TCpFHWSNSw6Uyih_CQ5iJA:a:3199654-1364663756","hideTimelineDate":true}],"service":"flipboard","remoteServiceItemID":"TCpFHWSNSw6Uyih_CQ5iJA:a:3199654","dateCreated":1364663756,"ingestionTime":1383628977,"sectionLinks":[{"type":"author","service":"flipboard","remoteid":"flipboard/mix%2F30770277","title":"Lonely Planet","referringText":"Lonely Planet","linkType":"user","image":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/dev_O/featured/30770277/LP_Logo_Avatar.JPG"}}],"hideTimelineDate":true,"partnerID":"lp","flipboardSocialId":"flipboard-TCpFHWSNSw6Uyih_CQ5iJA:a:3199654-1364663756","sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FA1KjB9dcRJKbCoAPElE4cA%3Am%3A3199654","time":85,"count":11,"rssText":null}]
