Major cities are acces­si­ble by plane from other parts of Europe, and once on the ground, dri­ving dis­tances are short and roads are smooth. An exten­sive bus net­work makes it pos­si­ble to do the trip by pub­lic trans­port, and two weeks will allow you to see the major cities and get a taste of life in the Balka­ns. Hot sum­mers and cold win­ters mean that the best time to go is late spring or early autumn.<p>Bosnia and Hercegovina<p><b>Sara­je­vo</b><p>Sara­je­vo is home to one of the pret­ti­est pedes­tri­an old towns in the Balka­ns. A walk through the mar­kets is a must before vis­it­ing the Latin Bridge, where Arch­duke Franz Fer­di­nand was shot at the start of World War I. A five-minute walk from the Old Town, a cable car takes pas­sen­gers to the top of Srd Hill for great views over the city, and fer­ries ply the routes to near­by islands like like Lopud, Koločep and Šipan. This 273km beau­ty trac­ing the coast­line of south­west Vic­to­ria is lined with icon­ic land­marks, from the world-famous lime­stone pin­na­cles of the Twelve Apos­tles to Great Otway Nation­al Park, home to koalas and other wacky Antipodean wildlife.<p>Isle of Mull and Isle of Coll, Scotland<p>Britain has severe restric­tions on wild camp­ing, so you need to head well off the beat­en track to enjoy a taste of free­dom - try the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Coll in Scot­land's Inner Hebrides. With 480km of coast­line and moun­tains approach­ing 1000m, Mull is the largest and most devel­oped, while tiny Coll mea­sures just 21km from top to toe and 5km across.<p>Cape Town to Cairo, Africa<p>We admit it: this is epic. You'll need at least three months and a vehi­cle with seri­ous cre­den­tials to cope with this trip, the over­land route from South Africa to Egypt. But if you have the time, the ener­gy and a four-wheel drive that can sur­vive rut­ted roads and sand dunes, the rewards are end­less and include a drive-by of Vic­to­ria Falls and Mount Kil­i­man­jaro.<p>Rocky Mountains, Canada<p>Cana­da's 230km Ice­fields Park­way is one of the world's defin­i­tive dri­ves, tra­vers­ing Banff and Jasper Nation­al Parks. It's a geo­log­i­cal won­der­land where you can chill in geot­her­mal hot springs or set foot on crag­gy glac­i­ers. Keep your eyes peeled to spot elks graz­ing by the road­side or even catch a glimpse of a brown bear.<p>'Top to toe', New Zealand<p>New Zealand might just be the per­fect place to take to the road. Pick up a van in Auck­land, head east to the Bay of Plen­ty, and cut through the North Island's vol­canic heart­land towards stun­ning Ton­gariro Nation­al Park. Just remem­ber to keep an eye on the road, despite the breath­tak­ing scenery.<p>A word of cau­tion, how­ev­er, Ha Giang still requires an offi­cial per­mit to visit more remote areas. Choose to trav­el with­out one and acci­den­tal­ly stum­ble upon mil­i­tary exer­cis­es in the moun­tains and you may find your­self a guest of the local Viet­namese police.<p>If the coast is more your cup of tea, ride noto­ri­ous High­way 1 between Saigon and Hanoi. The traf­fic can be daunt­ing around major cities, but there are some remote and des­o­late stretch­es with empty beach­es. Aim high over the Hai Van Pass, ignor­ing the tedious tun­nel that has been con­ve­nient­ly bur­rowed through the moun­tain.<p>For expe­ri­enced dirt bik­ers, it is pos­si­ble to explore rem­nants of the old Ho Chi Minh Trail across the bor­der in Laos. Rust­ing tanks and for­got­ten field guns lit­ter the jun­gle of South­ern Laos. The land­scape varies from shel­tered coves of pine-covered off­shore islands to high rock cliffs bat­tered by waves and wind, and usu­al­ly front­ed by reams of grey-blue ocean. Head to the west coast of Nova Sco­tia and around to New Brunswick to visit the Bay of Fundy where the high­est tides on the plan­et cre­ate sien­na silt shore­lines that change by the minute with the incom­ing or retreat­ing waters. Wher­ev­er you go you'll find sto­ry­book light­hous­es, bucol­ic vil­lages of white-picket home­steads and extreme­ly friend­ly folk. The region is tied togeth­er by well-maintained roads where you can choose to take scenic coun­try routes for leisure­ly explo­ration, or straight high­ways to cut down trav­el times. Good, clean camp­grounds with RV hook-ups are every­where or shack up at ubiq­ui­tous B&Bs.<p>Where to go<p>The obvi­ous start­ing point for a road trip on Cana­da's east coast is Hal­i­fax, Nova Sco­tia, a hub of live music pubs, sum­mer fes­ti­vals and his­toric archi­tec­ture. <b>Three days</b> Head west on HWY 3 stop­ping in at photo dar­ling Peggy's Cove. The high­light here is a near-perfect light­house perched on a bil­low of bare gran­ite boul­ders with crash­ing waves below. Take free tours on the local his­to­ry and geol­o­gy with the tourist office, or wan­der inde­pen­dent­ly past fish­er­men's hous­es on stilts, clut­tered by crab traps. From here the coast winds around inlets of ever­green islands until you reach his­toric Chester, which is known for the artists’ stu­dios along its minus­cule main street. Soon after Chester is larg­er Mahone Bay, the sun­ni­est town on the coast. Browse small craft shops in colour­ful 19th-century build­ings or rent sea kayaks to trip around the 100 or so islands in the bay. Last­ly, stop at Lunen­burg, the province's only UNESCO World Her­itage Site, know for its dis­tinc­tive 18th- and 19th-century archi­tec­ture. Take a sail­ing cruise, hire bikes to tour the beach­es of the penin­su­la, hop in a horse car­riage to tour the town or just wan­der around the antique streets to see what you'll find. <b>One week</b> Fol­low the three-day itin­er­ary then cross over to Wolfville and the Bay of Fundy via HWY 12. The coun­try has all the key ingre­di­ents: dra­mat­ic land­scapes, decent roads and off-the-beaten-track sights which are hard to access by pub­lic trans­port. The main attrac­tions are con­cen­trat­ed in the west, which is served by three high­ways run­ning par­al­lel from north to south, mak­ing it a breeze to nav­i­gate your way around the coun­try. The busiest road is the Desert High­way, the main artery con­nect­ing the cap­i­tal, Amman, with Jor­dan’s tiny slice of coast­line. It is the main route for access­ing the jew­els in Jor­dan’s crown - Wadi Rum and Petra - and the quick­est way to trav­el up and down the coun­try. The high­way lives up to its name, with bar­ren scenery along much of the route. How­ev­er, near­ing Wadi Rum, in the south, the land­scape takes a strik­ing turn with spec­tac­u­lar jebels (moun­tains) ris­ing from the sands. To visit Wadi Rum itself you need to leave your car in a bor­der­ing vil­lage and hire a dri­ver to take you in a 4WD. Expect a bumpy jour­ney through the sand in a vehi­cle that has prob­a­bly seen bet­ter days, but it’s all part of the expe­ri­ence so hold on tight and enjoy it. If you have the time, camp­ing in a tra­di­tion­al Bedouin tent is a must, as is set­ting your alarm for sun­rise when the desert looks at its fiery best. Sim­i­lar­ly, the road to Petra is a taster of the dra­mat­ic views which await you in the ancient city. Crag­gy moun­tains and deep crevices pep­per the route, with ample oppor­tu­ni­ty to pull over and take in the amaz­ing views. As you head down­hill to the south­ern tip of the coun­try, the moun­tain­ous scenery con­tin­ues to inspire. The end point is the vibrant port city of Aqaba which is worth a visit in its own right as well as being a good base for div­ing in the Red Sea. Anoth­er attrac­tion that will be on most peo­ple’s itin­er­ary is the Dead Sea. Float­ing around in the salti­est body of water on earth and get­ting cov­ered in the much laud­ed Dead Sea mud is a wel­come respite from long car jour­neys. Com­ing from the south of the coun­try, the Dead Sea High­way hugs the water all the way to the resorts and spas in the north. Get ready to hit the (usu­al­ly dirt) road out to these icon­ic ghost towns, most with­in spit­ting dis­tance of key­stone US nation­al parks.<p><b>Bodie, California</b><p>In the Sier­ra Neva­da moun­tains east of Yosemite Nation­al Park, and just north of the strange tufa spires of Mono Lake, Cal­i­for­nia’s largest ghost town, Bodie, stands in an inten­tion­al state of arrest­ed decay. As you walk down the empty main streets past the skele­tal remains of banks, board­ing hous­es and broth­els, you might get the impres­sion that the hurly-burly gold min­ers and red-light madams just packed up and caught the last stage­coach out yes­ter­day. A nation­al his­toric land­mark, Bodie now har­bors over 200 build­ings and his­toric struc­tures that could take you all day to explore. The rugged, part­ly unpaved access road is usu­al­ly closed by snow­fall in win­ter. Spring and fall are the most tem­per­ate sea­sons to visit; sum­mer gets pret­ty dang hot (bring lots of water!).<p><b>Rhyolite, Nevada</b><p>Out­side Death Val­ley Nation­al Park, the Neva­da min­ing town of Rhy­o­lite first boomed after the turn of the 20th cen­tu­ry. Dur­ing the few years it took for local gold mines to be exhaust­ed, Rhy­o­lite built itself an opera house and even had its own stock exchange. Dozens of Hol­ly­wood West­erns have been filmed here since the 1920s. To find Rhy­o­lite, drive west of Beat­ty, Neva­da, then fol­low the signs past the bizarre-looking instal­la­tion art of the Gold­well Open Air Muse­um to the eccen­tric 1906 Bot­tle House, its walls con­struct­ed from over 50,000 recy­cled beer and liquor bot­tles. Snap a photo of the ruins of the three-story Cook Bank, sil­hou­et­ted against a blaz­ing blue Mojave Desert sky, before you leave.<p><b>Grafton, Utah</b><p>Just west of Zion Nation­al Park, this pic­turesque ghost town was estab­lished by zeal­ous 19th-century Mor­mon pio­neers, who plant­ed fruit orchards and irri­gat­ed farm fields along­side the Vir­gin River. And while state-of-the-art main roads and motor­ways now link its cities and towns, there are some spec­tac­u­lar alter­na­tives. Turn off the main thor­ough­fares to dis­cov­er Ire­land’s most scenic stretch­es of asphalt with these five pic­turesque routes.<p><b>Dublin to Portlaoise via the Wicklow Mountains (138km)</b><p>The bustling Irish cap­i­tal of Dublin gives way to wild, remote coun­try­side in the Wick­low Moun­tains. At the foot of the moun­tains, Pow­er­scourt Water­fall (Ire­land's high­est), sur­round­ed by beech, oak and pine trees, makes an idyl­lic pic­nic stop. Sweep­ing vis­tas over the sur­round­ing blan­ket bog unfold from the Sally Gap moun­tain pass. The road winds through Wick­low Moun­tains Nation­al Park before descend­ing to the leafy vil­lage of Laragh. Turn­ing east here takes you past the pre­cip­i­tous, wood­ed Glen­dalough val­ley, shel­ter­ing Ire­land's finest monas­tic set­tle­ment, found­ed in the 6th cen­tu­ry by St Kevin. Many of its medieval build­ings are still intact. The val­ley's two teal-blue lakes flank the road east towards the Mid­lands hub of Port­laoise.<p><b>Wexford to Waterford via Hook Head (95km)</b><p>South­west of the Viking-founded town of Wex­ford, the Ring of Hook road cir­cum­nav­i­gates the wind- and wave-swept Hook Penin­su­la. Its jagged south­ern tip, Hook Head, is capped by the black-and-white-striped, 13th-century Hook Light­house (the world’s old­est work­ing light­house) and cloaked by sea spray. On the west­ern side of the Hook Penin­su­la, it's a five-minute cross­ing by car ferry from Bal­ly­hack, dom­i­nat­ed by a 15th-century cas­tle, to the thatched fish­ing vil­lage of Pas­sage East. These routes will get you out of the air­port and away from urban coag­u­la­tion as quick­ly as pos­si­ble, giv­ing you more time to explore.<p><b>London, United Kingdom</b><p><i>Heathrow–Wind­sor–Stone­henge–Chip­ping Cam­p­den,</i> <i>220 miles (354km)</i><p>Every­thing that is Lon­don is east of Heathrow Air­port, so imme­di­ate­ly head west on the M4 motor­way. After a mere nine miles (14km) you'll see the exit for Wind­sor, your first stop. This cheery lit­tle town is home to the sprawl­ing Wind­sor Cas­tle, where you'll most like­ly find the Queen when she's not at her urban digs.<p>Your next stop is Win­ches­ter, anoth­er beau­ti­ful town 50 miles (80km) south­west, where the name­sake cathe­dral is stuffed with 1000 years of Eng­lish his­to­ry. About 29 miles (40km) fur­ther west is Stone­henge, which is beau­ti­ful, mys­te­ri­ous and clichéd all at once. Drive 62 miles (100km) north, along roads that take you through the aching love­li­ness of the Eng­lish coun­try­side. Your goal is Chip­ping Cam­p­den, a town in the heart of the Cotswalds, home to every icon­i­cal­ly roman­tic image of rural Eng­land. Go for strolls amidst the beau­ty and tiny vil­lages. When your idyll is over, Heathrow is just 74 miles (120km) south­east.<p><b>Paris, France</b><p><i>Charles de Gaulle</i><i>–Reims–Cham­pagne–</i><i>Épernay, 189 miles (304km)</i><p>If there's one thing every­one agrees on, Charles de Gaulle Air­port is no place to linger. Hap­pi­ly, this is France so your oppor­tu­ni­ties to roam plea­sur­ably are bound­less, such as the hills of the Cham­pagne region. Yes, the City of Light is to the south­west but you'd never drive there – rather leave the air­port on the D212 road and after 2.5 miles (4km) turn north­west onto the N2 and begin your drive across the ever-more-lovely French hills and dales. Your goal is Reims, about 87 miles (140km) north­east of the air­port.<p>Reims has a famed 13th-century cathe­dral, replete with stun­ning rose win­dows, but your rea­son for this trip is embod­ied in the very name of the region: Cham­pagne. The most joy­ous­ly French of drinks orig­i­nates here – what could be a bet­ter reward for your jour­ney? Region­al dri­ving apti­tude and sit­u­a­tion­al aware­ness can range from com­mend­able to ter­ri­fy­ing, so stay on your toes when ven­tur­ing into unfa­mil­iar ter­ri­to­ry.<p>Know­ing the local dri­ving laws and unspo­ken road rules are just as vital when under­tak­ing a road trip. What's the speed limit on unpost­ed roads? If some­one flash­es their high beams is it because <i>your</i> high beams are on and you're blind­ing oncom­ing traf­fic, or because there's a cop hid­ing around the next cor­ner with a speed detec­tor? If you give some­one the fin­ger, will you receive the fin­ger in return or will gun-play ensue?<p><b>Old school rules</b><p>The first speed limit law in the US was set in Boston in 1757. On Sun­days, wag­ons, car­riages and hors­es could not exceed walk­ing pace. The fine: 10 shillings. Con­tem­po­rary speed laws are some­times a lit­tle more arbi­trary. Cal­i­for­nia's 'Basic Speed Law' and New York's 'Rea­son­able and Pru­dent' speed law can the­o­ret­i­cal­ly get a dri­ver fined no mat­ter the post­ed speed limit, if you don't stick with the flow of traf­fic or are oth­er­wise deemed to be a nui­sance.<p>Though rarely if ever enforced, there are aging, pecu­liar laws all over the coun­try that con­found rea­son, but are nev­er­the­less still on the books. In New Jer­sey and Ohio, legal­ly one must honk their horn when­ev­er pass­ing anoth­er car. You can be tick­et­ed if you leave your traffic-side car door open longer than is deemed nec­es­sary in Ore­gon. And ladies, dri­ving while wear­ing your house­coat is ille­gal in the state of Cal­i­for­nia.<p><b>New rules to keep in mind</b><p>Gen­er­al­ly speak­ing, tex­ting while dri­ving is mere­ly a sign of dan­ger­ous­ly low IQ, but since com­mon sense isn't nec­es­sar­i­ly a pre­req­ui­site for get­ting a dri­ver's licence, 39 states have taken the extra step to ban dri­vers from text mes­sag­ing. Like­wise, 10 states have also banned hand-held mobile phone use and dri­vers can be cited with­out any other traf­fic offence tak­ing place.<p>While strap­ping a dog to the roof of a car is tech­ni­cal­ly only ille­gal in Mass­a­chu­setts and Alas­ka, it's frowned upon pret­ty much every­where else too. This 273km beau­ty trac­ing the coast­line of south­west Vic­to­ria is lined with icon­ic land­marks, from the world-famous lime­stone pin­na­cles of the Twelve Apos­tles to Great Otway Nation­al Park, home to koalas and other wacky Antipodean wildlife.<p>Isle of Mull and Isle of Coll, Scotland<p>Britain has severe restric­tions on wild camp­ing, so you need to head well off the beat­en track to enjoy a taste of free­dom - try the Isle of Mull and the Isle of Coll in Scot­land's Inner Hebrides. With 480km of coast­line and moun­tains approach­ing 1000m, Mull is the largest and most devel­oped, while tiny Coll mea­sures just 21km from top to toe and 5km across.<p>Cape Town to Cairo, Africa<p>We admit it: this is epic. You'll need at least three months and a vehi­cle with seri­ous cre­den­tials to cope with this trip, the over­land route from South Africa to Egypt. But if you have the time, the ener­gy and a four-wheel drive that can sur­vive rut­ted roads and sand dunes, the rewards are end­less and include a drive-by of Vic­to­ria Falls and Mount Kil­i­man­jaro.<p>Rocky Mountains, Canada<p>Cana­da's 230km Ice­fields Park­way is one of the world's defin­i­tive dri­ves, tra­vers­ing Banff and Jasper Nation­al Parks.
