Pros­e­cu­tors revealed a list of more than 100 wit­ness­es, some of whom live in the gated com­mu­ni­ty where she was killed.<p>Pis­to­rius wept and prayed in court as he held hands with his broth­er and sis­ter before being served with the indict­ment. The ath­lete will face an addi­tion­al charge of ille­gal pos­ses­sion of ammu­ni­tion when his block­buster trial starts on March 3 in a court in the South African cap­i­tal, Pre­to­ria.<p>The indict­ment in the Pre­to­ria Mag­is­trate's Court yield­ed new details about how pros­e­cu­tors will pur­sue a case that has gripped the world because of the celebri­ty sta­tus of Pis­to­rius, who over­came his dis­abil­i­ty to become a glob­al phe­nom­e­non, only to see his name and accom­plish­ments tar­nished by his role in a vio­lent death. The tim­ing of the indict­ment was melan­cholic because Steenkamp would have cel­e­brat­ed her 30th birth­day on Mon­day.<p>The main charge laid by pros­e­cu­tors car­ries a manda­to­ry sen­tence of life impris­on­ment with a min­i­mum of 25 years in prison if Pis­to­rius is con­vict­ed. The pros­e­cu­tion's allu­sion to a pos­si­ble fight between the cou­ple at Pis­to­rius' villa before the shoot­ing rais­es the pos­si­bil­i­ty of a motive.<p>Pis­to­rius denies com­mit­ting mur­der and says he mis­took Steenkamp for a dan­ger­ous night­time intrud­er. upmar­ket hotels and shops on the seafronts are becom­ing a mag­net for crime gangs.<p>The author­i­ties in near­by Cannes pledged to tight­en secu­ri­ty last month fol­low­ing a record-breaking raid at the world-famous Carl­ton Hotel, which is a favourite of Hol­ly­wood stars rang­ing from Eliz­a­beth Tay­lor to Angeli­na Jolie.<p>A lone gun­man wear­ing a crash hel­met and scarf to cover his mem­ber of the noto­ri­ous Pink Pan­ther organ­ised crime gang.<p>Milan Popar­ic was freed from a Swiss jail by accom­plices car­ry­ing AK-47 auto­mat­ic rifles, mak­ing him the third Pink Pan­ther to have got out of prison in as many months. The gang has been tar­get­ing jew­ellery col­lec­tions for almost 15 years, steal­ing up £330 mil­lion worth, often from Riv­iera resorts like Nice and Cannes.<p>Many of the Pink Pan­thers are ex-soldiers from coun­tries like Ser­bia and Ukraine. India marked a major suc­cess in Feb­ru­ary 2012 by being removed from the World Health Orga­ni­za­tion's list of coun­tries plagued by the dis­ease.<p>Soma­lia now has 105 cases, fig­ures released Fri­day show, and anoth­er 10 cases have been con­firmed across the bor­der in a Kenyan refugee camp filled with Soma­lis. Glob­al­ly there have been 181 cases of polio this year, includ­ing those in Soma­lia and Kenya.<p>Vac­ci­na­tion cam­paigns in Soma­lia have reached 4 mil­lion peo­ple since the out­break began in May, but those health offi­cials have lim­it­ed access to about 600,000 chil­dren who live in areas of Soma­lia con­trolled by the armed Islamist group al-Shabab.<p>\"It's very wor­ry­ing because it's an explo­sive out­break and of course polio is a dis­ease that is slat­ed for eradication,\" said Oliv­er Rosen­bauer, a spokesman for the Glob­al Polio Erad­i­ca­tion Ini­tia­tive at the World Health Orga­ni­za­tion in Gene­va. \"In fact we're see­ing more cases in this area this year than in the three endem­ic coun­tries worldwide.\"<p>In a bit of good news, Rosen­bauer said in a phone inter­view with The Asso­ci­at­ed Press that polio num­bers are down in the three remain­ing endem­ic coun­tries.<p>\"The only way to get rid of this risk is to erad­i­cate in the endem­ic coun­tries, and there the news is actu­al­ly para­dox­i­cal­ly very good,\" he said.<p>Soma­lia was removed from the list of endem­ic polio coun­tries in 2001, and this year's out­break is the sec­ond since then.<p>It began one month after Bill Gates helped unveil a six-year plan to erad­i­cate polio at the Glob­al Vac­cine Sum­mit. I think that the snipers are aim­ing for kids, just kids.\"<p>Sam, crouch­ing behind sand­bags at the Bus­tan al-Qasr cross­ing point, is the only doc­tor on hand to treat those tar­get­ed by the snipers.<p>He is 25, speaks in an urbane North Amer­i­can drawl and has humor­ous eyes twin­kling above his sur­gi­cal mask.<p>He is the son of Syr­i­an exiles who set­tled in Cana­da. \"I was in the final year of my stud­ies to become a car­diac surgeon,\" he tells me.<p>But then he felt that he had to come here. Now he sleeps in a room in the field hos­pi­tal where he works. And in his time off, he comes to Bus­tan al-Qasr to wait for the snipers to open fire.<p>The pave­ment he sits on is dot­ted with dark brown blood stains.<p>\"On aver­age I treat about 10 peo­ple a day, every sin­gle day, but Fri­days are always the worst,\" he says. \"Yes­ter­day about 30 peo­ple were shot here.\"<p>Every­body reacts dif­fer­ent­ly to the sound of the sniper's bul­let.<p>When shots ring out, the sea of peo­ple in the mar­ket­place parts as most peo­ple press them­selves against the walls of the build­ings - as if, some­how, that will save them.<p>But the fatal­is­tic ones just carry on walk­ing straight down the mid­dle of the road in a ges­ture of defi­ance.<p>\"Some­times they just fire in the air, to scare people,\" I am told. But some­times they do not - Sam's work bears wit­ness to that.<p>The fre­net­ic ener­gy of Bus­tan al-Qasr's mar­ket­place is super-charged with fear.<p>\"At first we stayed away,\" a mar­ket trad­er tells me. \"But then we start­ed com­ing back. What else can we do? We have to live.\"<p>Sara is an activist and a stu­dent and she runs the gaunt­let every week.
