By giving talks. How do thinkers launch a brand? By giving talks. How do you break in? By reading this article.
Opportunities, it has been said, don't float down from the sky; they're attached to people. Which is why speaking gigs--and the potential connections and exposure they imply--are so valuable.
So how do we get to the podium?
First, make a connection
\"People putting on conferences want to offer the best content they can for the people who attend,\" notes entrepreneur-speaker Kate Matsudaira. You need to show them why you're an obvious part of that selection.
As with everything else, your odds of acceptance go up if you know the people in power. To make a better ask, Matsudaira notes, you should connect first. An introduction, even over email, will prime the pitching pump, as will a few Twitter interactions.
But take heed: Conference organizers, like other mammals, can sense if you're a clingy, sleazy, self-promoting predator. Like dating, hiring, and other forms of courtship, it's best to show them what you can add and avoid talking about what you need.
Next, make the pitch
Ben Orenstein broke into RailsConf because he made an enthusiastic, concise pitch: making his argument in two points and attaching a video of his speaking style.
The result? One of the conference co-chairs, after being forwarded the app, replied \"Wow... just wow.\"--that's the impression we're trying to make here!
Then: make speaking normal
The key, it seems, to landing such speaking gigs is making it something you do: a habit, a ritual, a craft.
To do that, Matsudaira has awesome advice:
Pitch, pitch, pitch: She reports that she's pitched the same conferences multiple times before they accepted her--even though she's now a known speaker.
• Know the timing: Many conferences start accepting applications six months ahead of time--so you can apply with an outline, then flesh it out as the date approaches.
• Study the process: Read abstracts of the talks that have been given, she says. This will clue you into the organizers' taste.
• Have a presence: This is a little old hat, but make sure you're readily Googleable. If they can't find you, you look like a risk.
Then, once you're accepted, it's a matter of finding your voice.
Bottom Line: Know the people, know the material, know the pitch. Repeatedly.
So you want to speak at a conference….","sourceURL":"http://www.fastcompany.com/3011059/bottom-line/how-to-non-sleazily-break-into-the-conference-speaking-circuit","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"largeURL":"http://e.fastcompany.net/multisite_files/fastcompany/imagecache/1280/poster/2013/06/3011059-poster-1920-how-to-non-sleazily-break-into-the-conference-speaking-circuit.jpg","mediumURL":"http://e.fastcompany.net/multisite_files/fastcompany/imagecache/1280/poster/2013/06/3011059-poster-1920-how-to-non-sleazily-break-into-the-conference-speaking-circuit.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcompany.net/ff49c8365879c1ed8b9bf580a42bcc461b7d96ec/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":1280,"original_height":720,"original_hints":"color,rgb-201-182-156,hires,photo"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Ffastcompany.com%2F5bdebfbf060a9d89f73024bc790388a766a0cb0b%2F646ed95f97050630914cf35b2a54916fe53244a8%2Farticle.html&partner=fastcompany&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252FUCmvQ8IITneeXVKb5449sA%253Am%253A40765873&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FUCmvQ8IITneeXVKb5449sA%3Am%3A40765873","partnerID":"fastcompany","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/fastcompany.com/5bdebfbf060a9d89f73024bc790388a766a0cb0b/646ed95f97050630914cf35b2a54916fe53244a8/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"BY DRAKE BAER","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/ceab760395d5e2c2dde0fd8f06b780af6276b15a/thumbnail.jpg"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"Ross Gale","authorUsername":"rossgale","userid":"40765873","authorDescription":"Ross is a writer who lives in Hawaii. Rather than apply theory to their novels’ structure, Dames argued, contemporary authors Teju Cole, Jennifer Egan, Jeffrey Eugenides, Ben Lerner, Sam Lipsyte, and Lorrie Moore had incorporated allusions to literary theory into the narratives of their novels themselves. The characters, in these examples, must contend with the ideas of the avant garde as opposed to their creators.Representations of theory varied from book to book but in Leaving the Atocha Station debut novelist (and accomplished poet) Ben Lerner appeared to be using the form of realist fiction to explore the psychology of a young poet who had been steeped in theory’s teachings. The social alienation experienced by Lerner’s protagonist/narrator/alter ego Adam seemed, in part, to be a consequence of his overdeveloped critical faculties, faculties he had to overcome, the book implied, or at least temper, if he wished to enter the world of normative adult relations. This, one might argue, is the trajectory Lerner meant to trace in Leaving the Atocha Station: the growing up and away from a place of paralyzing hyper-intellectuality into a state of being more amenable to emotional fulfillment. There is a way, though, to turn the novel on its head, to apply literary theory back onto the work itself to better explicate its themes. By doing so, one might even succeed in shedding light onto the situation of the author himself. In the novel’s early pages, Adam, a young American …","rssText":null,"sourceURL":"http://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/turning-the-novel-on-its-head/","feedTitle":"3:AM Magazine","feedUrl":"http://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/feed/","hideOnCover":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/kkkk.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/3ammagazine.com/472854be5bacf4728719712ce9da51d665533f21/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":590,"original_height":368,"original_hints":"color,photo,rgb-174-159-133,,main-image,main-image"},"language":"en","rssBaseURL":"http://www.3ammagazine.com/3am/turning-the-novel-on-its-head/","rssCustomClasses":"sysen","authorDisplayName":"David Winters","referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"Ross Gale","authorUsername":"rossgale","userid":"40765873","authorDescription":"Ross is a writer who lives in Hawaii. Rowling was exposed as Robert Galbraith","excerptText":"A mathematical analysis of \"The Cuckoo's Calling\" revealed the \"Harry Potter\" author's linguistic signature
“The man who wrote the note is a German. Do you note the peculiar construction of this sentence?” These were the words of Sherlock Holmes in “A Scandal in Bohemia,” analyzing a note from a client, unmasking the King of Bohemia incognito, and incidentally, establishing himself as a brilliant literary analyst. It is impossible to keep a secret from the legendary Sherlock Holmes, who can read an ocean from a drop of water. Just as the paper would have carried the marks of the royal fingers, to the skilled reader the writing carried the marks of the royal mind.
Fiction has recently become fact with the improving science of stylometry, the study of writing style. In 1964, Frederick Mosteller and David Wallace published a three-year study of the distribution of common words in the Federalist Papers and showed that the writing style of Alexander Hamilton and James Madison differed in subtle ways. For example, only Madison used the word “whilst” (Hamilton used “while” instead). More subtly, while both Hamilton and Madison used the word “by,” Madison used it much more frequently, enough that you could guess who wrote which papers by looking at how frequently the word was used. Mosteller and Wallace took this work it its conclusion, and were able to show that certain “disputed” papers, claimed by both Hamilton and Madison, were overwhelmingly likely to have come from Madison’s pen. Today, computers can do this type of analysis in seconds, whether to uncover a case of murder-disguised-as-suicide, study an anonymous medieval poem, resolve disputes about authorial credit, or even provide political asylum for a refugee. In the last case, for example, a critic of a repressive foreign government claimed asylum on the basis of articles he had written and published on-line. The problem, though, was that the articles had been published anonymously. This wouldn’t necessarily stop a repressive secret service, in a place where mere suspicion is enough for imprisonment. But this technology was able to convince the immigration judge of his authorship of the documents in question, and hence to let him stay.
Over the past decade, I have developed a computer program to do this sort of analysis of writing style, based on literally millions of …","sourceURL":"http://www.salon.com/2013/08/23/how_j_k_rowling_was_exposed_as_robert_galbraith_partner/","allowFullscreenImage":true,"inlineImage":{"mediumURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/salon.com/ed93b285aee810df423d77975bcf6276f18daaac/original.jpg","smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/salon.com/ed93b285aee810df423d77975bcf6276f18daaac/thumbnail.jpg","original_width":620,"original_height":412,"original_hints":"color,dark,rgb-102-84-48,focus-408-170,photo,face-408-170-86"},"readButtonCaption":"Read Article","sourceMagazineURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/flipmag?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.flipboard.com%2Fsalon.com%2F907fd4c2817052819a943196ae2b87f0abb0199c%2Ff260693dad8d5c416686e8b3c46328d5677c8d89%2Farticle.html&partner=salon&tml§ion=flipboard%2Fcurator%252Fmagazine%252FUCmvQ8IITneeXVKb5449sA%253Am%253A40765873&fallbackTml","language":"en","article":{"sectionID":"flipboard/curator%2Fmagazine%2FUCmvQ8IITneeXVKb5449sA%3Am%3A40765873","partnerID":"salon","url":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/salon.com/907fd4c2817052819a943196ae2b87f0abb0199c/f260693dad8d5c416686e8b3c46328d5677c8d89/article.html"},"authorDisplayName":"By Patrick Juola","authorImage":{"smallURL":"http://cdn.flipboard.com/twimg.com/d8b8ba37ed07d765e7c81060ff116e0fec25e1a1/thumbnail.jpg"},"referredByItems":[{"type":"status","authorDisplayName":"Ross Gale","authorUsername":"rossgale","userid":"40765873","authorDescription":"Ross is a writer who lives in Hawaii.
